Position Title: Pacific Region Transport Specialist (On-call, Part-Time)

Location:  Los Angeles, CA

Purpose: The Pacific Region Transport Specialist is responsible for driving and support during transports. This position will be the main contact to partners, the transport coordinator, and the transport manager during the times of transports to deliver proper ETAs of arrival and pick-up. This position is responsible for the safe handling and delivery of animals in the care of Best Friends Animal Society during transports. The transport specialist is also responsible for keeping proper inventory of animals on transport and ensuring they are being taken to their correct destination.

Essential Duties:

  • Serve as a driver and animal care specialist during transports of the Pacific Region Transport Program.
  • Working with partners to safely and properly load and offload animals to and from the transport vehicle.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is properly maintained and clean prior to and during transports.
  • Spot cleaning carriers in between spots.
  • Performing wellness checks of animals at stops and communicating any illness including but not limited to: dehydration and overheating.
  • Communicate throughout the trip estimated times of arrival (ETAs) to both sending and receiving partners to ensure timely drop-off and pick-up of animals.
  • Open communication with the transport coordinator and transport manager of any issues that occur while on the road.
  • Pre and post transport checks of the transport vehicle to ensure all supplies are ready. Help to identify supplies that need to be repaired or replenished and report to the coordinator and/or the transport manager.
  • Ensure that volunteers are trained and performing in conjunction with all policies and procedures of Best Friends Animals Society (BFAS), and that they deliver quality customer service including disseminating appropriate information as well as perform duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals and contributions and business for BFAS and its programs.
  • Be able to professionally communicate Best Friends positions on issues.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to both partners and members of the public.
  • Other duties assigned by the Transport Manager.

Additional Duties:

  • Be able to clean, offload transport vehicle to ensure preparedness for next transport.

Required skills and experience:

  • Valid commercial class A driver's license preferred, Valid commercial class B may require additional specific license requirements, over the road training and endorsements.
  • Driver must comply with State and Federal rules and regulations regarding the operation of commercial vehicles in interstate commerce.
  • Drivers must meet Best Friends company driver qualification standards.
  • Vehicles will be based out of the Southern California area, but subject to relocation through LA County.
  • Flexibility to work remotely and be on-call for unexpected transport needs.
  • Frequent overnight travel and long hours of traveling are required.
  • Experience communicating and building relationships with rescue partners is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions on behalf of Best Friends and the transport program to maintain best practices and appropriate standards for the safe transportation of animals.
  • Computer literate (including but not limited to): Microsoft Office, Shelterluv software, Google Docs.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

Physical Job Requirements:

  • Ability to drive vehicles of all sizes for extended periods of time over the course of several days.
  • Must be able to routinely lift 40-50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Basic handling skills of animals of various sizes and breeds.
  • Flexibility with schedule as the days and hours of the week my vary to accommodate the needs of the transport program. This includes weekends, nights, holidays and on-call work.
