The Shipping and Receiving Manager ensures the department is meeting the logistical needs of each department to the highest standard. The Manager will oversee and assist in deliveries of incoming mail and packages, storage and delivery of donated goods to departments, outgoing mail and package operations and animal department food storage and delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage, direct and lead the team in delivering exceptional warehousing, shipping, delivery and animal supply services.
  • Develop, manage and direct systems/processes for supply storage, inventory control, rodent control, remote logistical support and incoming/outgoing services at the Sanctuary.
  • Define and manage Shipping and Receiving priorities considering needs from other departments.
  • Coordinate with Development to identify food needs and utilize Corporate Partners.
  • Coordinate with Animal Care managers to identify and meet food needs for each department.
  • Manage food storage, distribution, inventory tracking, and quality control.
  • Ensure uninterrupted service during Red Days, Holidays, and staff PTO.
  • Financial Management - develop and manage the annual operating budget and implement cost savings measures where possible.
  • Interface with Senior Managers, Directors and Project Managers on capital related items specific to Shipping and Receiving.
  • Perform annual staff performance evaluations and assist staff in development of their annual performance goals.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with local Network Partners and Regional Specialists in order to coordinating outgoing food donations.
  • Liaison with logistics companies, food companies and vendors as required.
  • Create a positive and healthy work environment and a cohesive team, as necessary administer personnel corrective actions efficiently and consistently.
  • Lead staff in monthly Safety Meetings addressing all aspects of workplace health and safety in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Safety and Security.
  • Responsible for staff development, hiring, training, and retention.
  • Ensure that Shipping and Receiving Department staff understand the Best Friends culture, mission, and guiding principles.
  • Keep abreast of BFAS current news and communicate relevant information to staff members.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum three years of managerial work experience. Client facing customer service experience is strongly desired.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to establish business and financial justifications for department initiatives.
  • Experience in staff development and performance management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels is essential.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple competing demands often concurrently.
  • Be resourceful, proactive and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Resolve problems and seek answers constructively, enthusiastically, and collaboratively.  
  • Basic knowledge of methods, equipment, materials, and practices used in shipping, receiving and warehouse operations
  • Professionally and enthusiastically advocate Best Friends position on issues.
  • Must be computer literate with demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with inventory systems, such as Springboard, strongly desired.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain valid forklift license and maintain OSHA certification.
  • Willing to travel as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on a computer and sitting with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including, but not limited to: lifting and carrying up to 80 lbs., reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
