Location:  Kanab, Utah

Position Summary: To maintain the skin and coat health of all dogs in their designated areas through professional grooming techniques. Foster and maintain relationships with difficult dogs. Rotate bathing/grooming of dogs in designated areas on an as needed basis.  


  • Responsible for professionally grooming dogs in designated area.
  • Maintain skin and coat health through regular grooming, and identify needs of each individual dog.
  • Responsible for grooming dogs that have significant behavioral issues which may include shyness, fearfulness and aggression.
  • Responsible for grooming dogs that have significant medical issues which may include a variety of zoonotic disease.
  • Share with team leader, area team leader and staff ways they can upkeep the dog's skin and coat in the area between grooming.
  • Keep records on grooming in Lifetime Care Plans and dates on google spreadsheet.
  • Notify team leader (your own and the dogs area) of concerns, issues, etc.
  • Assist in transporting dogs from area to grooming facility and back.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary work environment.
  • Report any maintenance issues to team leader and fill out maintenance request.
  • Perform medical baths as prescribed by the clinic.
  • Mentor interns on grooming techniques and handling.
  • Maximize efficiency to get a large number of dogs groomed daily.
  • Assist last minute needs (for adopters, emergencies, etc.)
  • Flexibility with grooming schedule.
  • Ambassador of the brand for all volunteers and visitors, promoting the Best Friends mission and demonstrating the "specialness" that is the sanctuary.
  • Responsible for the safety and training of volunteers: orienting them to assigned animal area, assigning work, answering questions, and assisting with their needs.
  • Interacting with tours: be available to greet tours, and answer questions.
  • Working and interacting with interns and workshop attendees: assigning work, answering questions, and assisting with their needs.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Able to identify medical issues with dogs.
  • Cultivate good team building practices through good communication, sharing information, and working together to achieve goals.
  • Fill in caregiving role as needed. This may include but not limited to: feeding and medicating dogs, poop scooping, walking the dogs based on area schedule, providing enrichment, working with volunteers assigned to that area.
  • Fill in front desk role as needed. This may include but not limited to: answering the phone and emails, greeting visitors and volunteers, input data to various software, ordering supplies, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Interface well with the public as a representative of Best Friends.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision to required standards.

  • Resourceful, must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive work environment.
  • Willingness to work on weekends, holidays and varying shifts.
  • Ability to take initiative and complete required tasks in a timely & professional manner.
  • Professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Computer literate, including but not limited to checking e-mails daily, Microsoft Office, ADP and Shelterluv. Training will be provided.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with ability to drive on behalf of the organization. 

Physical Requirements:

  • This is a physical job requiring extensive time on your feet performing physical tasks.
  • Must be able to routinely lift 50-80 pounds.
  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to 100 degrees.
  • Able to walk dogs that pull on leash, and restrain physically strong dogs.
  • Be able to safely use tools such as scissors, clippers, sheers, nail clippers, etc...
  • Must be able to work on feet all day with frequent bending, lifting, stooping, kneeling, walking, and twisting on a regular basis.
