Position Summary

The Volunteer Engagement Manager is responsible for the recruitment, assignment, management and training of all volunteers within Houston Programs for Best Friends working towards No Kill 2025 and beyond. This position is the central point of contact for all relationship development, management and growth for our volunteers with a heavy focus on retention and relationships.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, facilitate, monitor, and evaluate all volunteer and foster programs issues and needs including but not limited to: oversight of foster/volunteers (lead and volunteer coordinators; foster coordinators), foster/volunteer engagement, volunteer mentors, foster/volunteer onboarding process, data entry accuracy and input, performance management, foster/volunteer and staff appreciation gatherings.
  • Ensure integration of the Houston volunteer program with national volunteer and volunteer engagement areas as appropriate.
  • Oversee and evaluate strategic recruitment of specific volunteer and foster needs for the support of lifesaving programs, including increasing bottle baby foster homes and all identified specialized volunteer roles for lifesaving needs.
  • Oversee the development of foster and volunteer operational programming, including creation/auditing of new volunteer or foster opportunities to maximize lifesaving needs.
  • Keep detail and current records of all foster care homes as well as volunteers to ensure accurate and timely communications as needed to support and expand new and existing volunteer initiatives.
  • Assist the senior management team with defining the volunteer and foster goals and strategies for the program goals, as well as defining and executing the strategies to achieve said goals.
  • Represent Best Friends at national, regional and state events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics.
  • Ensure Best Friends staff and volunteers are working closely together and productively with one another to achieve desired outcomes. In addition, deliver quality customer service including disseminating appropriate information as well as perform duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals and contributions and business for Best Friends Animal Society.
  • Ensure all issues raised by volunteers and/or staff as it relates to volunteers are addressed with speed and hospitality to ensure continued support and volunteer retention.
  • Perform scheduling for all volunteers and volunteer engagements.
  • Recruit, interview and train all volunteers in the Best Friends processes, procedures and protocols required to ensure success for the volunteers and the Best Friends Animal Society programs with a focus on education and volunteer retention.
  • Work within budgets and meet revenue and expense goals as assigned by leadership.
  • As identified, building relationships with shelters, organizations and key individuals within designated communities.
  • Report on interesting stories to the appropriate person within Communications to ensure the message and story are shared broadly.
  • Participate in and represent Best Friends at all identified events at the direction of leadership
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills / Experience:

  • Solid management/leadership and animal welfare experience: 2+ years of proven successful experience.
  • 3+ years of customer service experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in management or equivalent are preferred. However, experience above the minimum will be considered in lieu of a college degree and certification.
  • Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures in a positive and fair manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to problem solve and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to set goals, and work independently to plan and carry out projects.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication (verbal and written), listening and customer service skills.
  • Experience in caring for and handling animals.
  • Experience working in a municipal shelter or collaboratively with municipal shelters preferred
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer tools such as word processing, Google, spreadsheets, presentations, database, internet research, etc. Experience with Shelterluv shelter software preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to routinely lift 60 pounds.
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time to include repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
