Location: Houston, TX

Position Summary: This position is responsible for the provision of medical care and corresponding protocol management for all program animals focused on the live outcomes necessary to continue and expand lifesaving in the Houston Program area in support of No Kill 2025 and beyond.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Best Friends medical team and leadership in the development, implementation and ongoing oversight of protocols for the Houston medical programs.
  • Participate in surgeries as needed at the behest of leadership including but not limited to post-surgical care and support.
  • Perform new animal intake, including but not limited to vaccinations, microchipping, blood draws, basic intake examinations.
  • In the event of emergencies this position will be on call and expected to respond to support animal care and medical procedures as needed.
  • Triage daily caregiver observation forms and alert leadership as needed.
  • Daily walk-throughs in the center, monitoring general health of animals. 
  • Provide routine medical care for animals in programs ensuring all medical needs and certifications are met and routine health screenings and check-ups are completed and documented as needed for medical history for all animals.
  • Manage communication with all fosters, owners, partners and staff as may be needed in regard to animal medical care.
  • Daily cleaning of work areas including but limited to, cleaning cages, mopping floors, maintenance of surgical equipment (tables, ET tubes, anesthetic equipment) etc.
  • Prepare, fill and administer prescriptions for program animals under the direction of leadership
  • Perform medical care including but not limited to wrapping wounds, blood draws, medicating, nail trimming, IV catheter placement, SQ and IV fluids, fecal tests, microscopic exams, grooming needs, etc.
  • Manage supplies and inventory as it relates to medical supplies and equipment including but not limited to procurement with leadership approval.
  • Data entry of medical notes, laboratory results, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Skills / Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Veterinary Technician.
  • 1+ years as a Registered Veterinary Technician registered with the State of Texas.
  • Must maintain annual, bi-annual registration credentials including but not limited to any necessary continuing education requirements as defined by the Texas Veterinary Association to maintain registration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Minimum of 3 years Animal Handling experience.
  • Administrative experience required.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database, internet research, etc.
  • Experience with Shelterluv shelter software preferred.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and be available on call.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 60 pounds.
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time to include repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
