Location:  Remote/Telecommute in Northwest Arkansas

Best Friends is at the beginning of a two-year fundraising campaign to build, open, and sustain a one-of-a kind community pet resource center in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Best Friends Pet Resource Center will provide critical local, regional, and national services to advance lifesaving in the Northwest Arkansas region, Arkansas statewide, and across the country. The Center will play a key role in helping Best Friends advance animal sheltering and achieve a no-kill nation by 2025.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Campaign Director will be responsible for overseeing the two-year Best Friends Pet Resource Center capital campaign in Bentonville, Arkansas. S/he will develop a portfolio of major and principal gift level donors in Northwest Arkansas and the greater Southcentral region. The successful candidate will be instrumental in creating, implementing, and promoting the goals of Best Friends Animal Society, raising capital and operating funds, and creating strong relationships with high net-worth prospects and donors. The Fundraising Lead will work from a home office based in Northwest Arkansas and will meet with donors up to 60 percent of the time.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Lead $13.5M Pet Resource Center campaign (includes capital and operating funds).
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships with new prospects and current donors.
  • Research prospects, provide regular cultivation touches, and fulfill the acknowledgement process for stewardship of donors.
  • Solicit middle, major, and principal gift prospects in consultation with the Chief Development Officer and Director of Major Gifts.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of individual prospects, and personally secure at least $4M for the campaign.
  • Maintain working knowledge of institutional priorities that may match donors' area of interest. These priorities are clearly articulated in the campaign case for support and other fundraising materials.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Foundation Partnerships in relationship development and proposal writing for campaign foundation prospects.
  • Coordinate with the Corporate Partnerships team on local opportunities for cause marketing, workplace engagement, in-kind donations, event sponsorship, etc.
  • Work and interact with local program staff as needed, with a focus on engaging community members, volunteers, and potential local donors.
  • Manage expense reports according to organizational protocols.
  • Use the constituent relationship management (CRM) database to track prospects and donors through all stages of relationship management.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned.

Skills and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree required. Masters Degree or Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) a plus.
  • Proven experience leading a capital campaign, including ability to support a $13.5M campaign and personally secure $4M in pledges in two years.
  • Minimum of 10 years development and management experience, with a successful track record in major and principal gifts fundraising in a non-profit organization, preferably in a regional setting.
  • Embodies the Best Friends' Mission and embraces the guiding principles with enthusiasm and positive presence in all interactions; ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues.
  • Knowledge of companion animal welfare, sheltering, and rescue work a plus.
  • Nonprofit events experience required; especially hosted events and larger cultivation events.
  • Understanding of planned giving principles and vehicles; and ability to coordinate interactions with donors and planned giving officers to facilitate a gift.
  • Experience securing in-person meetings with corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Proficient in fundraising databases such as Blackbaud CRM, Raiser's Edge, or similar systems.
  • Valid Driver's License and access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • May work at a computer with extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Make public presentations to large and small groups.
  • This position requires frequent travel throughout assigned region as much as 60 percent throughout the year. Employee is expected to make travel arrangements and be comfortable and competent with various forms of transportation and accommodations on behalf of organization business.
