This is a full-time temporary position running from approximately July 1st - October 4th, 2019

Location:  Kanab, Utah

To achieve our organizational goal No Kill by 2025, Best Friends' branded merchandise must be developed, sourced and strategically circulated. The Merchandise Specialist is an essential part in driving brand awareness through the sourcing and development of Best Friends branded product. The Merchandise Specialist plays an advising and consulting role, making recommendations to the merchandise team and internal customers. The Specialist collaborates cross-functionally ensuring the correct mix of products are developed, distributed, stocked and displayed. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • In-depth knowledge of Best Friends mission and brand awareness as well as knowledge of the animal advocacy movement
  • Work with Senior Merchandising Specialist on projects relating to merchandise sourcing, product design and vendor relations
  • Builds sustainable relationships with vendors / suppliers in order to ensure the development of Best Friends Branded mission driven merchandise
  • Work with the Inventory and Reporting Specialist to ensure appropriate inventory levels across all facilities, place orders/reorders when needed
  • Monitor the progress of orders placed, provide tracking information when available. Ensure orders arrive on time, in the right quantities and meet our brand guidelines by partnering with Inventory and Reporting Specialist
  • Work with vendors to ensure competitive pricing, timely delivery schedules, quality of goods including branding opportunities and communicates any changes to the necessary parties
  • Provide support to Manager, Merchandising and Product Design by preparing product selling recaps relating to trends, strengths and opportunities at our Lifesaving Centers. Develops additional recaps and reports as needed
  • Responsible for making the sourcing process efficient through knowledge of vendor / supplier's capabilities and development of those relationships
  • Keep assortments current by staying informed of trends and innovations in the animal welfare industry. Attend trade shows and/or webinars to research merchandise opportunities and report on these findings
  • Review Best Friends weekly merchandise sales reports to maintain familiarity with stock performance
  • Perform other duties as required 

Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrates deep understanding of product being developed and how it contributes to our organizational brand awareness and net goals
  • Great communication and interpersonal skills, works well with limited supervision
  • Able to juggle many tasks and prioritize with efficiency
  • Meticulous "eye" for detail and accuracy
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Highly analytical, detail oriented and organized
  • Basic mathematical skills and possess working knowledge of the Internet and Microsoft Office software programs (Word, Outlook, Google, and Excel)
  • Minimum Associates degree preferred or equivalent work related experience 

The ideal candidate is an excellent negotiator who understands sourcing, the importance vendor / supplier relationships and the goals of developing branded and mission-driven merchandise for Best Friends. The ideal person for this job would be a problem solver, highly analytical, professional, positive attitude, takes initiative & uses tact and diplomacy with vendor / suppliers and fellow staff members.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting at a desk and working on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Lifting up to and including 50 lbs.
  • Some travel
