Location: Houston            

Position Summary:  Responsible for managing the implementation of the general vision, direction and all aspects of Best Friend's Houston program with guidance and input from the Senior Director, Lifesaving Centers or their designee. This includes, but is not limited to, the strategic planning and budgeting process, human resource and personnel, statistical and data collection and assessment, coalition engagement and leadership, development support, programming, advertising, marketing, public relations and promotion, and community affairs.  Responsible for effective administration of the program, meeting stated goals and staying within budget. These responsibilities will evolve as the program is built out.

 Essential Duties / Responsibilities: 

  • Work across organizational lines to coordinate and develop long term and annual strategic planning process as directed and as it relates to Houston programs.
  • Direct and implement local program activity and events in coordination with our national efforts.
  • Develop and execute project plans, status reports, and comprehensive documentation as it relates to Houston programs.
  • Monitor overall budget for Houston programs; enable and empower Houston staff to oversee their specific budgets. Modify as needed.
  • Supervise, create, review, and approve benchmarks and progress with Houston personnel to ensure the success of the program's strategic plan and goals.
  • Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve program goals.
  • Provide staff with systems of accountability. Empower staff to achieve goals, holds staff accountable and provide a monthly reporting system of determining measurable successes.
  • Provide regular communication and conduct regular meetings with staff and other stakeholders to oversee assigned activities.
  • Interact and coordinate activities across divisions, working closely with managers and division directors, for the Houston program
  • Ensure integration of the Houston program with other areas as appropriate.
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships with animal welfare and rescue community leaders to build out the coalition and increase collective lifesaving.
  • Identify and cultivate key relationships with legislators, council people, city planners, Best Friends members, volunteers, supporters and others.
  • Monitor trends in the animal welfare field both locally and nationally, and advise on positioning, messaging and programming. Share information with other team members about news and emerging programs, actively seeking ways we can help.
  • Consult with grassroots humane organizations and individual animal advocates, providing practical advice and assistance.
  • Create, develop, and implement a plan for Best Friends' involvement in designated key communities in the program area for Houston.
  • Represent, as requested, Best Friends at national, regional and state events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to Best Friends work in Houston.
  • Respond to immediate animal welfare situations as they unfold on a daily and weekly basis. 

Skills / Experience: 

  • Solid management or leadership experience: 3+ years of proven successful experience, including overseeing budgeting, staff and operations.
  • Background in the humane movement: 3+ years of experience working for or with a humane organization.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in difficult and fast paced situations are a must.
  • Experience developing and implementing management policies in a positive and fair manner. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to set goals, and work independently to plan and carry out projects.
  • Demonstrated exceptional communication (verbal and written), listening and customer service skills.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Proven attention to detail with advanced organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues. Knowledge and experience in the animal welfare movement required. 
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Public speaking and presentation experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion. 
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
