The Software Engineer III is responsible for providing technical expertise, leadership and mentorship to the software engineering team.  The Software Engineer helps to define and set coding and architecture standards and practices and give similar input on other technical items.  The Software Engineer works closely with the Manager of Software Development to determine priorities, technical approach and future direction.  The Software Engineer will actively generate code, participate in code reviews and be involved in deployments and operational support.

Responsibilities/Essential Duties

  • Providing software engineering team with leadership, technical expertise and mentorship. (40%)
    • Working closely with the team on ensuring that the project goals are being met with the solution being coded, that standards are being followed and efficient practices are being employed.  
    • Helping to investigate new technologies and integrate them into the development efforts, moving the department forward and keeping the technology stack current and relevant.
    • Working with management to understand and plan future work, discuss the technical approach, generate architectural diagrams, etc. 

  • Actively generating code, providing application support for production systems, doing code reviews and similar operational support/project related activities. (40%)  
    • Taking an active hand in projects and difficult operational issues.  

  • Participating in required administrative tasks.  Actively participating in operational support meetings, CRM support meetings and other key business support items. (20%)

Skills and Experience:

  • A baccalaureate degree in business, computer science, information systems or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of coding experience as a senior developer. Skills in the Microsoft programming environment using C#, web technologies (Javascript, NodeJS, and similar), and Microsoft SQL including SSIS and similar technologies.  Familiar with common data-interchange formats (i.e. JSON), web services and other endpoint and API technologies. 
  • Familiarity with the LAMP technology stack.
  • Experience programming with Python.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services technologies including Cloud Formation, Cloud Watch, Lambda, Glue, Dynamo DB, S3, Storage Gateway, API's, and similar items.
  • Familiarity with IIS and/or Apache configuration, setup and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of Git and the related technologies in order to utilize it for builds and as a source code repository.
  • Experience in providing team leadership and mentorship to software engineers.
  • 2 years of experience dealing with one or more of the following: CRM systems, Animal Care Systems, Clinic Medical Systems, Accounting, HRIS and similar core business systems.
  • Experience coding and deploying in large, complex projects.  
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to work with other team members to achieve the overall goal.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of and experience with formal change management methodologies.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' mission and position on issues.
  • Ability to travel one to four times per year for meetings in Kanab, UT, at regional sites or for conferences and other purposes. 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
