Position Summary: This position is responsible for supporting the Director of Grassroots Advocacy in the effort to build, oversee, and execute a grassroots, and grasstops, engagement strategy for Best Friends Animal Society in support of achieving Best Friends' no-kill 2025 goal and better engaging the public in our mission. The Grassroots Advocacy Specialist will manage the legislative advocacy components of Best Friends' grassroots strategy and will work with grassroots advocates to achieve legislative and campaign wins in support of Best Friends' mission. This position will also provide communications, outreach, and campaign support for Best Friends' legislative efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with Director of Grassroots Advocacy and legislative team, manage the planning and execution of Best Friends grassroots engagement in support of legislative efforts on priority issues.
  • In collaboration with Director of Grassroots advocacy, execute Best Friends' grassroots involvement in designated/assigned communities.
  • Implement resources and training for grassroots advocates and community leaders.
  • Serve as a point of contact and manage relationships with community leaders.
  • Develop communications materials and collateral in support of legislative and grassroots efforts including, but not limited to, fact sheets, talking points, opinion editorials, and letters to the editor.
  • Represent Best Friends in meetings with elected officials, government staff, community organizations, and other partner groups.
  • Represent Best Friends at local events, conferences, and community meetings including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to our mission.
  • Work in collaboration with legislative attorneys, Digital Advocacy Lead, and Digital Engagement team on digital engagement of advocates in support of legislative efforts.
  • Work in collaboration with volunteer and other relevant internal departments to grow number of grassroots advocates and leverage existing data/volunteers to maximize Best Friends' outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Ensure that Best Friends grassroots engagement work is always consistent with and supportive of the "BFAS" organizational brand.
  • Keep abreast of other national grassroots advocacy efforts and best practices.
  • Aid in managing database of grassroots advocates.
  • Manage logistics for and execution of grassroots and legislative events.
  • Support internal communications related to legislative and grassroots efforts.
  • Coordinate with other Best Friends departments to ensure grassroots efforts integrate with and support other organizational activities and priorities.
  • Report all lobbying activities in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Complete monthly progress reporting, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in grassroots advocacy, political or issue-based campaigns, or legislative affairs.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in difficult and fast-paced situations.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, particularly the ability to distill complex information into easily understandable and persuasive communications for a layperson audience.
  • Solid understanding of the legislative process.
  • Proven track record of organizing grassroots advocates to support legislative efforts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Background in the humane movement: 2+ years of experience working for or with a humane organization preferred.
  • Experience with reviewing statistical information to inform program direction.
  • The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Proven attention to detail with advanced organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Experience with overseeing large-scale events.
  • Experience managing volunteers and/or grassroots advocates.
  • Public speaking and presentation experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems.
  • Fluent in Spanish preferred.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Out-of-town travel for the job is expected to range from 30% to 50% depending on the location of the jobholder and the specific responsibilities and tasks assigned.
  • Ability to be in a shelter environment and handle dogs of all sizes and cats when necessary.
  • Able to drive a Best Friends vehicle when necessary.
