Location: Best Friends (Kanab, UT)

Position Summary: The Team Lead (TL) will be assigned several buildings and will assist in the coordination of workflow, control of work procedures, provide training, act as a liaison with management and facilitate outcomes for cats. The TL will have overall responsibility for the supervision of caregivers and the health, well-being, and general care of the cats living in the assigned areas of Cat World.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Perform the following functions (with input from management as needed):
    • Monitor and document performance, including regular check-in's
    • Participate in performance management process
    • Participate in hiring process
    • Participate in scheduling of caregivers
    • Support other departments to increase positive outcomes
  • Ensure all records within area of responsibility are accurate, organized, up-to-date, and easy to access.
  • Manage overtime of team members according to Manager directives.
  • Knowledge of all cat dynamics in their areas.
  • Responsible for assuring that the caregivers are providing socialization, enrichment and behavior work as need, documenting the work they are doing with the cats.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to ensure that cats receive appropriate medical care and barriers to adoptions are eliminated.
  • Act as liason between caregivers and other departments as needed.
  • Provide guidance and oversee the cleaning of work areas and preserve physical appearance of cat buildings and grounds and ensure workorders are submitted as needed.
  • Cultivate good team building practices through good communication, sharing information, working together to achieve goals.
  • Mentor and provide ongoing coaching for each individual caregiver.
  • Participate and at times run team meeting and/or staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with Adoption and Marketing team to meet our goals.
  • Conversant in Best Friends mission and goals and function as advocate with staff and visitors
  • Relate to employees, volunteers, and visitors in a friendly, informative, and professional manner to ensure they have a positive experience.
  • Fill in as caregiver as needed.
  • Identify and implement improvements to tasks, processes, and protocols.
  • Participate in identifying and implementing creative programing that supports our goal of leading the nation to no kill by 2025.
  • Participate in the mentorship program and community outreach.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Skills / Experience:

  • A minimum of one-year Best Friends work experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience caring for cats in a shelter environment including knowledge and skills relating to all aspects of care, i.e., medical, enrichment, training and behavior.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, positive, personable, upbeat and energetic who effectively uses tact, diplomacy, and clarity in daily interactions.
  • The successful candidate would take initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved.
  • Ability to make sound judgments, accept responsibility for ones' own actions, and work independently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Display a willingness to learn by listening and asking questions. Be attentive to others' needs and willingly assist as required.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience interacting with the general public.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues and act in best interest of Cat World, Best Friends, and the wider animal rescue community.
  • Must have the ability to foster a cooperative work environment with staff as well as volunteers.
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer software programs and applications including Microsoft Office 365 and the ability to learn new applications quickly.
  • Must have a driver's license with access to transportation to drive on behalf of organization business

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 40 pounds
  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a frequent basis, including, but not limited to: climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, and bending.
  • Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
