This is a part time position working less than 30 hours per week

Location: 307 West Broadway, New York City, NY 10013

Position Summary: The Foster Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers that provide foster homes for animals in Best Friends New York's Pet Adoption Center and Kitten Nursery. 

Essential Duties:

  • Field and respond to all inquiries about the foster program, screening potential new foster homes, and processing foster applications.
  • With the input of the Lead Caregiver and Senior Manager of Lifesaving, establish Standard Operating Procedures for the foster program and ensure all staff and volunteers are trained and adhering to SOPs to ensure the safety and care of animals while in foster care.
  • Responsible for overseeing medical care of animals in the foster program, which includes ensuring vaccinations on schedule, arranging all medical procedures, and approving after-hour emergencies.
  • Process invoices for payment from partner veterinarian at the time of service, ensuring timely payment of veterinary services. Report invoice discrepancies to the NY HR and Finance Administrator promptly.
  • Oversee the Foster After Hours Line, establishing a monthly call rotation.
  • Create and maintain a database of all volunteers in the foster program.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support to foster homes. This can include: training, providing supplies, giving medical advice, emergency care support and also helping to maintain the morale of foster supporters.
  • Maintain constant communication with foster families to ensure that animals are showcased at the Pet Adoption Center and off-site adoption events as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Adoption Specialists and the Lead Caregiver to prioritize animals that need placement in foster homes. This includes regular communication about the availability of foster homes.
  • Conduct transport of animals as needed.
  • Maintain supplies needed to support volunteers in the foster program, ensuring all foster homes have appropriate medical and care supplies.
  • Oversee recruitment strategy and volunteer appreciation for volunteer foster program.
  • Complete adoptions with the support of the Adoption Specialists.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • 2 years previous experience working with cats and dogs required, preferably in adoptions. Must be able to work with all cats and dogs, including those with health concerns/conditions as well as behavior conditions.
  • Customer service experience required.
  • 2+ years managing volunteers.
  • Proven ability to promote a positive work environment.
  • Engaging and friendly interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with the public and various forms of media outlets on behalf of the organization.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends Animal Society positions on issues.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Maintains a clean driving record.
  • Experience with and ability to drive large multi-passenger vehicles including vehicles over 10,000 pounds.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database, internet research, google programs, etc.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Must have the ability to make decisions on behalf of the organization and coalition members as to approval of animals into adopted and trial homes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, positive, personable, upbeat, energetic, proactive, tactful and diplomatic.
  • Resourceful, roll up the sleeves attitude. The successful candidate must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically demonstrate flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
  • Knowledgeable of breeds, care giving, and characteristics of animals. Dog training and cat behavior experience a plus.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor. Including spending an extended period of time outdoors in all weather, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: walking, hiking, bending, lifting, carrying, twisting, reaching, stooping and squatting.
  • Ability to effectively and safely handle a variety of animals and spend extensive periods of time with those animals in close quarters.
