Location:  Kanab, Utah 

The Dogtown Manager aligns the Dog Department with the overall Organization's strategic goals. Directing the work that the Dogtown team does focusing on achieving the greatest lifesaving impact and visitor engagement. Develop and implement strategic programming that can be utilized as an outward facing resource to the Regional Programs and Network Partners.

Responsibilities/Essential Duties:

  • Provide strategic direction and managerial oversight for the operations, flow and outcomes for the dog programs at the Sanctuary.
  • Build and assess the training and behavior capabilities of the department to meet Sanctuary needs and support the outreach work of the organization.
  • Oversee admissions and flow process and supervise the development and implementation of outcome plans for each Sanctuary dog.
  • Ensure the visitor experience is positive and consistent throughout the department.
  • Lead and manage staff:
    • Responsible for recruitment and onboarding of new employees.
    • Identify and resolve employee relations and performance issues.
    • Establish and maintain a professional work environment while providing appropriate leadership and direction.
    • Set clear goals and expectations.
    • Prioritize, assign, and review work assignments.
  • Work with the adoption and marketing teams to identify strategies for reducing length of stay (for the adoptable population), increasing adoptions, and marketing of specific animals.
  • Collaborate with the Lifesaving Centers and regional programs, identifying opportunities to strategically work together on animal-related issues as needed to meet organizational goals.
  • Prepare and manage the department's operational budget and metrics, including purchasing, reconciliation and forecasting.
  • Develop, improve or implement employee engagement strategies and support development opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain cross departmental collaborations to meet the needs of the dogs and staff and to achieve organizational goals.
  • Identify and oversee progress for capital projects and maintenance needs.
  • Serve as a key representative of the Dog Department re: public presentations, email correspondence, shelter / rescue group consultations, etc.
  • Responsible for assuring on-call support is available for Sanctuary dogs on sleepovers and Sanctuary dog emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience:

  • This is a leadership position requiring 3 plus years' experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Experience in developing and implementing department level strategic plans ensuring alignment with organizational strategies and goals.
  • Must be problem solving, solutions oriented; creative and innovative with the ability and comfort to change directions quickly and as needed.
  • Ability to manage change and lead the team through change.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Experience in team building and staff development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in various stages of development, each with a unique timeline.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to facilitate group processes as well as develop and influence others.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business. Access to driving records will be needed for insurance purposes.

  • Perform full range of movement: stretching, bending, squatting, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., etc.
  • Work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Travel via various forms of public transportation for organization events including conferences, media events, etc.
