Location: Remote, local program city preferred (Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York City, Houston) but not required

Position Summary:

The Specialist, Development Communications will work with, and under the supervision of, the Senior Manager of Development Strategy to help deliver fundraising communications and content in support of the Campaign to Save Them All. This campaign is essential to Best Friends Animal Society achieving its national no-kill mission by the end of 2025. The Specialist, Development Communications will play an important role in persuasively communicating Best Friends' mission, strategies, and achievements to donors and prospects through proposals, case statements, presentations, fact sheets, and talking points for major gift, foundation, corporate, middle donor, and stewardship teams. Must be able to manage multiple projects at once; learn quickly and adapt to new processes; apply creative and analytical thinking to proposal development; and effectively support Best Friends Development teams.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Development teams (principal, major, and middle gifts; foundations; corporate; and planned giving) and program managers to understand organizational funding priorities and translate complex information into clear, vibrant talking points, letters of inquiry, funding proposals, descriptions of giving opportunities, and case statements to secure five- to seven-figure gifts and grants.
  • Work with the Senior Manager of Development Strategy and the Finance department to understand and align program budgets for use in donor cultivation and solicitation.
  • Effectively and quickly respond to requests for tailored proposals by front-line fundraisers and relationship managers with high-quality and collaborative proposal writing that meets brand standards and tone.
  • Work collaboratively with the Stewardship and Creative teams on major/principal gift donor reports as necessary.
  • Enter data and document written materials in the constituent relationship management (CRM) database to track support for solicitations and help maintain other team key performance indicators.
  • Maintain and update relevant content on SharePoint intranet for easy access by Development colleagues.
  • Support all Development teams in Community Foundation and Donor-Advised Fund engagement by conducting research, preparing talking points, writing collateral, completing organization profiles for Best Friends, and developing other materials that communicate Best Friends' local programs and impact.
  • Support Senior Manager of Development Strategy in creating supportive and effective fundraising tools, templates, and frameworks.
  • Support Senior Manager of Development Strategy in executing a multi-pronged approach to training fundraisers that covers a variety of educational needs and learning styles.
  • Participate on task forces and special projects as directed.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties and support other areas of the Development team as necessary.

Skills / Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2-3 years experience in professional writing. Grant proposal writing experience preferred.
  • Superior writing skills with the ability to synthesize complex or diverse information and edit for quality, congruity, and style.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with data and budgets.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A commitment to team collaboration and communication, while working independently with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to produce superior quality work under pressure and nimbly manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Computer skills and experience working with fundraising software, grant research tools, and CRM systems.
  • Ability to professionally and effectively communicate Best Friends' mission, vision, and programmatic scope.
  • Valid Driver's License with ability to travel on organization business approximately 8 times per year to meet with foundation partners and prospects; attend conferences; and host meetings at the Best Friends' Sanctuary in Utah and regional centers.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work for extended period of time at a computer with repetitive typing, arm, and hand motion.
  • Travel via various forms of public transportation on behalf of organization business.
