Position Summary: The Data and Analytics Specialist is responsible for working within the Business Intelligence & Strategy Team to provide statistics and analytical interpretations to Regional Managers, cross-divisional teams and other outside stakeholders through: 

  • Compilation, aggregation, analysis, interpretation, reporting and development of observations/recommendations involving shelter statistics/data/results, community assessments, industry data, demographics, etc. with the goal of informing decision making, prioritization and strategies for our no-kill goal
  • Keeping abreast of trends and best practices and statistical needs identified to improve understanding of priority shelters, markets and programs to increase impact/lifesaving
  • Serving as a connection and knowledge source for internal BFAS divisions as well as for the industry at large.

This position will aid in establishing Best Friends as the innovator and leader in the No Kill Movement, by ensuring data is proactively mined to deliver impact-driving insights.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and interpret shelter and market data to help in developing strategies for communities, states and/or regions to increase lifesaving.
  • Work with Manager to validate and "scrub" the data received into IT Data Warehouse to ensure correctness, lack of duplication, etc., to develop the "official" organizational National Shelter Dataset
  • Analyze data for trends, insights or other observations and communicate relevant findings to applicable areas within the Best Friends
  • Collaborate with IT staff on the shelter-data collection process and National Shelter Database, including exploring opportunities to enhance and automate the data for increased efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Programs division/s (as well as external stakeholders as requested) on data analysis and interpretation, including animal welfare information, demographic analyses of geographic area(s), National Shelter Dataset information, etc., as approved by Manager.
  • Create timely and meaningful reports, analyses, forecasts, etc., to fulfill planning, strategy and measurement needs, including but not limited to:
    • Compiling statistics and analyses in support of Development/fundraising.
    • Evaluating and culling insights related to geographic/demographic data to aid in the prioritization and identification of program opportunities.
    • Respond to requests for statistics, program results, metrics and/or analysis.
  • Assist in developing measurement systems and metrics to gauge program/mission effectiveness and progress, as well as provide findings to management and other stakeholders.


  • Work with Manager and stakeholders on analytical studies as assigned.
  • Work with Manager in determining any other necessary data sources for analyses (e.g., Claritas demographics, APPA, veterinary and low/no-cost spay/neuter clinics, etc.).
  • Aid other members of Business Intelligence & Strategy department in gathering data or conducting analyses as needed.
  • Support the Enterprise Data Warehouse team in their efforts to standardize, streamline and automate collection of, and access to, data.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills / Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in math, statistics, analytics or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications such as Excel, Word and Outlook (or equivalent).
  • Familiarity working with Tableau and Claritas demographics and census information, or comparable, a plus.
  • Comfort in learning new software programs, databases and online information systems as they become relevant and necessary.
  • 2+ year(s) experience in statistical gathering, interpretation and presentation/packaging.
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare/present understandable reports (oral and/or written) for others within the organization.
  • Demonstrated high comfort level with mathematics, statistics and data analysis-related skills.
  • Strong sense of curiosity and high tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to multi-task.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including being team player, professional, upbeat, flexible and willing to take initiative.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit, type, look, and work at a computer screen for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
