Position Summary: This is a leadership and management position within Best Friends Animal Society. This position is responsible for overseeing the building and general management of Best Friends' City program and Coalition in Atlanta metro area. Emphasis will be on growing activity in Atlanta and maintaining organizational awareness by providing key community awareness of the shelter death problem, how key stakeholders in the region are currently trying to solve the problem, and the strategies through which Best Friends can collaboratively help the city achieve no-kill status. This position will help lead the implementation of Best Friend's efforts within the region. The Lifesaving Center Director is also responsible for managing the integration of Best Friends Animal Society Atlanta staff into the organization culture. 

Essential Duties / Responsibilities: 

Lead the determination of the purpose and role of Best Friends' effort in Atlanta within Best Friends, and the determination and implementation of the strategies for engaging shelters and rescues, individually and in coalitions to achieve our organizational Vision:

  • This may involve reaffirming the existing role, refining the existing role or other outcomes deemed useful. Ensure that the purpose and role is appropriate and consistent with Best Friends' organizational mission.
  • This may involve reaffirming the existing vision, refining the existing vision, or other outcomes deemed useful. Ensure that the vision is appropriate and consistent with Best Friends' organizational vision and Best Friends' leadership vision for the No-kill movement.
  • This will involve participating in the development of and choosing the key strategies from among many possible strategies and ensuring that there is broad understanding and support within the organization for these key strategies.
  • Organizational Capabilities and Capacity. Lead the development of the Organizational Capabilities and Capacity required to implement the Strategies within the city program.
  • Ensure that Best Friends Animal Society's employees in this program understand the Best Friends organizational culture and act in accordance with it in order to achieve optimal results and employee engagement and to live and represent the Best Friends brand core values.
  • Stewardship of the Best Friends Brand. Ensure that Best Friends employees within this program understand the Best Friends brand and the role that they play in building, sustaining, and communicating that brand to external constituencies.

Development and Execution of the Best Friends City Programs and Coalitions

 Align with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of Best Friends on the city program goals, including the definition of what success looks like by the end of 2020 and the interim milestone goals.

  • Co-lead with National Marketing the development of the regional Best Friends "brand" within the city program.
  • Lead the execution of Best Friends city program and coalitions within the city through general management of any adoption, spay/neuter, and partnering programs implemented by Best Friends.
  • Ensure that Best Friends city program work is always consistent with and supportive of the organizational brand.
  • Ensure that city program staff as well as staff of the entire Best Friends organization understand the City presence and priorities and that staff work consistently to fulfill Best Friends' brand promise.
  • Be able to support National Development staff in representing the vision, strategies for achieving the vision, and status of execution of strategies within the city in any meetings with donor prospects as arranged by or in conjunction with the National Development staff who have responsibility for Best Friends development efforts in the city. 


  • Ensure that there is alignment with the SLT on the role of the adoptions, spay/neuter, community cat, behavior, volunteer and partnering programs implemented in the city program.
  • Help identify gaps in shelter operations of key network partners in order to increase and speed up lifesaving in areas identified to have potential for high impact.
  • Create written recommendations on how the program and other city shelter or rescue can fill those gaps and how they can work collaboratively with others outside the shelter system to achieve no-kill by 2020 (or sooner) in that community.
  • Be accessible as a mentoring support for key partners in the city.
  • Work closely with other city program directors, regional directors, and NMHP network partner managers to help identify key partners, assess lifesaving gaps, and help create plans to fill those gaps. 
  • Provide ongoing mentorship for assigned key network/animal welfare partners in order to achieve no-kill by 2020. 
  • Work closely with regional directors, executive directors, and the NMHP network leadership team, and other divisions to ensure local, regional, and national coalition efforts are coordinated and effective. 
  • Work with the SLT to define what the animal-saving goals are for 2016-2025 (which includes the achievement of a 90% Save Rate or higher for target communities), as well as any other quantitative and qualitative measures of success.
  • Lead the development of strategies for what must be done to achieve animal-saving goals for each strategic planning period. This includes all strategies related to adoption, spay/neuter, and partnering programs, as well as any other local initiatives and animal-saving.
  • Build the capabilities and capacity to implement the chosen strategies at the appropriate scale. This includes developing the organizational and individual capabilities in the following areas:
    • Performance measurement and reporting (setting planned animal-saving outcomes; accumulating and reporting actual outcomes; understanding the outcomes we got and why we got them)
    • Effective guidance of and collaboration with the National Marketing team to market the city program's services (that is, to build demand for them) and to fulfill the demand for Best Friends programs
    • Delivery of adoption, spay/neuter, and partnering programs
    • Organization and mobilization of volunteers in support of local, regional and national efforts.
    • Procurement and management of supplies, inventory, facilities, equipment, and utilities.
    • Selection, management, development, retention, of staff and all HR matters
    • All IT matters (in close coordination with central IT)
    • External and internal communications
    • Accounting and finance (including budgeting of expenses and revenues; accumulating and reporting actual results; understanding the results we got and why we got them)
  • Serve as the principal Best Friends liaison with all community partners: shelters, rescue groups, municipalities, elected officials, and others as relevant within the metro Atlanta area.
  • Create, develop and implement plans for Best Friends' involvement in Atlanta. This includes developing a model no-kill strategy.
  • Represent Best Friends at local events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to our mission.
  • Develop, communicate, motivate and sustain a predisposition within the employees toward continuous improvement and toward innovation to save more animals. 

National Programs Executed In the Region 

  • Coordinate with the leaders of National Programs and National Events to determine which of these programs and events to execute in the city and at what scale.
  • Ensure that local staff and National staff work closely together to achieve the desired outcomes of these programs and events.
  • Evaluate the results of the programs and events in relation to the desired outcomes and use this information to inform future strategic and operational plans. 

National Consulting and Mentorship

  • Provide shelter consulting to key partners in other regions of the country
  • Provide ongoing mentorship to leadership at key partners in other regions of the country. 

Skills / Experience: 

  • Solid leadership and management experience: 5+ years of proven successful experience, including overseeing strategy, operations, budgeting and staffing.
  • Background in the humane movement: 5+ years of experience working for or with a humane organization preferred.
  • Experience with reviewing statistical information to inform program direction.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in difficult and fast-paced situations.
  • Experience with large teams including remote staff and a management style of delegation and empowerment of a management team.
  • Experience developing and implementing management policies in a positive and fair manner.
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism are necessary for this position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to understand and manage a large budget.
  • Proven attention to detail with advanced organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Experience with overseeing large scale events.
  • Experience working with volunteers and donors.
  • Public speaking and presentation experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Out-of-town travel for the job is expected to range from 30% to 50% depending on the location of the jobholder and the specific responsibilities and tasks assigned.
  • Ability to be in a shelter environment and handle dogs of all sizes and cats when necessary.
  • Able to drive a Best Friends vehicle when necessary.
