Location: Los Angeles, CA

The Specialist is responsible for promoting, coordinating and facilitating large scale adoption events and on-site pet adoptions, as well as facilitating other forms of positive outcomes for pets which include foster and rescue transport. This position will directly support and impact Best Friend's mission to go no-kill nationwide (and in Southern CA) by 2025!  

Under the guidance of the Lifesaving Manager, a typical day includes creating a welcoming experience for clients looking to adopt, matching eager pet parents to their perfect pet through lifestyle matching and adoption counseling, working with adopters to troubleshoot any issues, providing post-adoption expertise and supporting the coordination of the placement of pets into foster homes for our pets in need.

Lastly, the Lifesaving Specialist will mentor and support center volunteers through classroom and hands on training in building a skilled volunteer workforce to provide positive outcomes for our pets!  


  • Facilitate entirety of adoption or Foster process according to Best Friends Animal Society standards and philosophy to include (but not limited to): client surveys, checklists, agreements, dog meet dog intros, screenings, medical records, behavioral records, post-adoption support / client correspondence (emails / phone calls).  
  • Provide consistent, enthusiastic, high quality customer service to clients who visit/call Best Friends Lifesaving Center as well as resolving problems and addressing any client dissatisfaction.
  • Provide basic behavior and medical training to clients based on the animal(s) needs to set all parties up for success.
  • Maintain accurate animal records with most pertinent information to help place animals into suitable homes / foster homes.  Animal records include (but are not limited to): past / current medical examinations, on-site behavior observations / notes, in-home behavior observations / notes.Interact with caregivers, trainers and management on a regular basis to learn the specific details about each animal to make the right match for a new home. 
  • Utilize shelter management software to efficiently track animals coming to/leaving pet center, update relevant center documents as required including tracking adoptions for coalition members / communicating with partners when an animal is adopted, etc.
  • Oversee, train, and work with volunteers: assigning work, providing training, answering questions, promoting Best Friends mission, and assisting with their needs.
  • Assist with duties relating to all positive outcomes as needed, including but not limited to foster care, volunteer day outings, and rescue transfers.
  • Perform any additional tasks as requested by the Lead Adoptions Specialist, Lifesaving Manager, Senior Manager of Operations, or Executive Director.

  • The successful candidate must have the imitative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically demonstrate flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
  • Must be able to work independently and use good judgement in the decision-making process, as well as work collaboratively with other adoption specialists and interdepartmentally.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' mission and position on issues.
  • Knowledge and experience with animal behavior (shelter and in-home) and medical care a plus.
  • Computer literacy and ability to learn new software quickly. This includes but is not limited to: Microsoft Office 365, shelter management database, volunteer and foster scheduling database, POS system, and client wait app.
  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time to include repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor including bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, etc.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, and holiday work.
  • Spend an extended period of time outdoors in all weather, including extreme heat and cold.
