Location:  Kanab, Utah

Team Leads, working under the guidance of their Area Manager, play a key role in achieving Best Friends Animal Society's organizational no-kill mission and goals. Team Leads provide oversight of the health, care, and wellbeing of dogs in their assigned areas and act with urgency and efficiency to find adoption and support transfer outcomes for dogs at the Sanctuary. With lifesaving outcome success, Best Friends can continually save animals at risk of being killed in shelters in Utah, and across the country.

Purpose: Team Leads are responsible for coordinating workflows and daily assignments relating to all aspects of outcomes and care for dogs including providing supervision, training, guidance, direction, and oversight of staff in their assigned areas. While this role includes responsibilities in all areas of Dogtown, Team Leads may receive intensive assignments in a particular program or area, based on organizational needs. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Outcomes

  • Promote, coordinate, and facilitate mobile, and on-site pet adoptions; drive creative and innovative solutions for hard to place animals; maintain or delegate regular updates to dog photos and bios; ensure superior customer service and new pet parent counselling.
  • Support transport program operations including but not limited to animal selection, preparation, and records management.
  • Promote, recruit, support, empower, and enable volunteer foster parents with the goal of utilizing volunteers to expand Best Friends lifesaving capacity.

Leadership & Care

  • Provide leadership, support, mentoring, and coaching for team members and volunteers to ensure all assigned responsibilities are completed, to facilitate maximum lifesaving results, and that each person achieves their fullest potential as contributors to Best Friends mission and goals.
  • Serve as a care provider alongside team members, and liaison between Dogtown and other departments, ensuring all department objectives for care, and health and behavior monitoring, as established by leadership, are met.
  • Provide regular performance feedback, participate in periodic and annual reviews, develop and deliver corrective actions when necessary, participate in the hiring process, and make certain performance metrics are met.

General

  • Deliver superior customer service and relate to all visitors, adopters, fosters and transfer partners in a friendly, informative and professional manner.
  • Work collaboratively, and with a positive attitude, with all Best Friends' department teams for the care, benefit, promotion and ultimate outcome of all dogs in our care.
  • Identify workflow efficiencies, opportunities for building or department improvements relating to workflow, work areas, facilities, animal movement, and other objectives.
  • Follow Best Friends policies, procedures, and task lists for daily lifesaving outcome assignments; including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of one year working with dogs in group housing or sheltering living situation.
  • Ability to work with and handle all dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs including medicating, socializing, and performing behavior modification techniques.
  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until lifesaving outcome goals are achieved; demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software (Best Friends uses Shelterluv), or desire to learn. 

Physical & Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to:
    • Routinely lift 65 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
    • Work at a computer or driving a car for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm, and hand motion.
    • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • Daily exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
  • Ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position includes weekends, nights and holiday work.
