All staff in Information Technology Services regardless of their unique position - are expected to perform their assigned duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, with full awareness of responsibilities toward managing personal and organizational data, with priority regard to delivering customer service, as leaders in learning and adapting to new technologies and in constructive and effective collaboration with colleagues.

Position Summary: Responsible for creating, integrating and supporting public facing web sites. Ability to analyze requirements and transform them into designs, functionality and test plans. Will participate in code reviews and be involved in deployments and operational support. Works directly with other IT members, the design team, internal customers, external customers, vendors, and the web development team. Helps to mentor less experienced developers and assists the other members of the team with day-to-day workflow management to maintain the best possible productivity. Maintains and implements web and web supporting technology to support Best Friends' mission.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

Design, Develop and Test Web Site and Related Enhancements (60%)

  • Actively participates in sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily standup meetings and other activities as directed. Updates tracking system as appropriate.
  • Generates code for software according to specifications. Writes programming scripts to enhance functionality and/or performance of applications as assigned.
  • Runs and monitors performance and functionality tests on new and existing code to identify errors and isolate modules for improvement and debugging.
  • Participates in code reviews and similar processes.
  • Writes documentation for modifications to existing systems as needed.
  • Where necessary helps ensure that adequate sandbox/development environments exist. Assists in steps necessary to make these functional.
  • Coordinates with the necessary departments to both develop and deploy code.
  • Helps to bring generated code and other necessary software to production. The includes internally generated code as well as third party packages as required. Responsible for coordinating with the necessary departments to ensure these activities are successful.
  • Other duties in this area as required and assigned.

Responsible for operational issues (30%)

  • Work with the other IT and user teams to determine the cause of, troubleshoot and solve operational issues.
  • Assists in system management as requested. Performs system corrections, version updates and configuration changes as needed and assigned.

Participate in required administrative tasks. (10%)

  • Actively participate in operational support meetings, key business support items and
    other related activities.
  • Complete necessary administrative duties such as self-evaluations and related tasks.

Skills / Experience:

  • 3+ years of direct programming experience in a Drupal/PHP web development
    environment with a solid object-oriented background.
  • Familiarity with agile/scrum software development practices.
    BS Degree in Computer Science, Information Science or related field or equivalent
  • Proficiency with Javascript and jQuery.
  • Proficient with ReactJS, NextJS or GatsbyFluency in HTML 5, CSS 3 and responsive web development.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services including technologies such as CodeDeploy,
    CodePipeline and Lambda is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn a complex Application Programming Interface (API).
  • Experienced with Git/Github for source control and work item management.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time/within budget.
  • Able to comprehend other web-centric programming languages.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Will interact with a wide variety of
    persons from both IT and the business.
  • Need to be detail oriented with a strong competency in task/time and scope
  • Able to work in a multi-department team environment and maintain a professional
    demeanor within a flexible work environment.
  • Demonstrates initiative and self-motivated, conscientious and provides complete follow through
    on areas of responsibility, with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to work weekend, holiday, and evening hours as needed.
  • If applying for a remote position, demonstrated experience in working remotely.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Available for limited travel for activities such as home office meetings/events,
    conferences and training.
