Summary: The Dogtown Manager is a key leader, helping the Sanctuary Animal Care team achieve the greatest lifesaving impact and visitor engagement in support of Best Friends Animal Society's no-kill mission and goals. Overseeing one of the largest teams at the Sanctuary the Dogtown Manager supervises nearly forty buildings, approximately fifty staff and nearly 400 dogs in-care on an average day. This manager is the Sanctuary based resource for Best Friends' regional centers, national programs, and Network Partners relating to dogs.

Purpose: To lead an efficient and effective Dogtown team, focusing on outcomes, animal care, visitor engagement, and employee success. Supervising Dogtown Team Leads to ensure workflows, staff assignments, animal intakes, and animal movement reach their peak lifesaving potential. While this role is responsible for Dogtown, managers may receive assignments in other programs or areas, based on organizational needs. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Outcomes & Lifesaving

  • Promote lifesaving objectives throughout the department, coordinating admissions flow, care plans, and outcome plans that reduce length of stay are developed for each animal, drive creative and innovative solutions for hard to place animals, ensure the team is regularly updating photos and bios and providing superior customer service to visitors.
  • Serve as the Sanctuary based canine representative for the No Kill Utah (NKUT) and Sanctuary 2025 initiatives, maximizing Dogtown's ability to support lifesaving in Utah, Best Friends Lifesaving Centers across the country, and animals, shelters, or states designated by the organization as high priority.
  • Lead a "volunteers-first" team in conjunction with Best Friends volunteer department to support, empower, and maximize the use of volunteers, expanding Best Friends lifesaving capacity.

Leadership & Care

  • Provide strategic direction, support, mentoring, development, and coaching for Dogtown staff and volunteers, to facilitate maximum lifesaving results, and that each person achieves their fullest potential as contributors to Best Friends mission and goals.
  • Recruit and onboard new Dogtown employees, provide performance feedback, conduct periodic and annual reviews, develop and deliver corrective actions when necessary, maintain a positive and professional work environment, establish goals and review work assignments.
  • Prepare and manage the department's operational budget and metrics including purchasing, reconciliation, forecasting and inventory controls, and identify, prioritize, and oversee progress for capital projects and maintenance needs.


  • Lead the department in delivering superior customer service relating to all visitors, adopters, fosters and transfer partners in a friendly, informative and professional manner.
  • Serve as the key Dogtown liaison, with all Best Friends' department teams in collaboration for the care, benefit, promotion and ultimate outcome of all dogs in our care.
  • Follow Best Friends policies, procedures, and task lists for daily lifesaving outcome assignments; including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Required Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum three years professional leadership/management experience required with a background managing dog populations in group housing or sheltering living situations preferred.
  • Experience developing and implementing department level strategic plans, including change management, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
  • General skills in handling dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs including medicating, socializing, and performing behavior modification techniques.
  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until lifesaving outcome goals are achieved; demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to speak on, and professionally advocate for, Best Friends' position on issues, including public speaking, presentations and consulting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software (Best Friends uses Shelterluv), or desire to learn.

 Physical & Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to:
    • Routinely lift 65 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
    • Work at a computer or driving a car for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm, and hand motion.
    • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • Daily exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
  • Valid driver's license with ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position includes weekends, nights and holiday work.
