The Lifesaving and Care Specialist works with a dynamic group of animal advocates to facilitate pet adoptions and oversee the health, well-being and care of pets at the Best Friends Los Angeles Lifesaving Center. The Lifesaving and Care Specialist will work with all departments to find animals homes wherever possible and serve as mission and brand ambassadors for Best Friends. This position will directly support and impact Best Friends' mission to go no-kill nationwide (and in Southern CA) by 2025!

Under the guidance of the Manager of Animal Programs, a typical day includes creating a welcoming experience for clients looking to adopt, matching eager pet parents to their perfect pet through lifestyle matching and adoption counseling, working with adopters to troubleshoot any issues, providing post-adoption expertise and coordinating foster homes of pets in need. As a Lifesaving and Care Specialist you'll also hone your skills in administering medications, providing proper nourishment and enrichment for the pets in our care, and helping ensure kennels/cages are properly sanitized and clean so that they're able to put their best paw forward! 

Lastly, the Lifesaving and Care Specialist will mentor and support center volunteers through classroom and hands on training in building a skilled volunteer workforce to provide care and attention to our pets.


Essential & Primary Duties/Responsibilities Include:

Animal Care / Admissions Support -

  • Perform daily animal feeding, continuous animal area / all center "next" practice cleaning, disinfection and sterilization, as needed, and daily animal enrichment activities in accordance to time frames/time stamps.
  • Monitor pet eating habits, behavior and medical habits/issues and ensure information is relayed to all supervisors/staff at Best Friends Lifesaving Center (as needed).
  • Maintain accurate, organized, up-to-date records for all the pets in the building including; up-to-date and correct kennel cards, kennel/area locations, etc.
  • Be responsible for the teaching safety protocols and hands-on training for volunteer and new staff.
  • Perform inventory of all animal care supplies including pet food, medical supplies, dry storage and cleaning supplies as well as daily pet population inventories as instructed by supervisor.
  • Ensure all animal care team volunteers are trained in caregiving/handling policies and procedures, and that any corrective action is handled in real time with professionalism and a teaching mentality
  • Work side-by-side with Leadership and the Dog/Cat Behavior Team(s) to continue growth and development of "next" practices Behavior modification and handling techniques.
  • Provide meaningful forms of engagement, enrichment and handling for pets in our care in order to prepare them for success in a home.
  • Monitor for and report any medical/behavioral observations to the appropriate team
  • Assist with administering prescribed oral and topical medications
  • Assist with restraint for veterinary exams, vaccines and minor procedures as needed

Outcomes & Foster Program Support -

  • Support lifesaving objectives by assisting with all aspect of the adoption or foster process to include: regularly updating animal photos and bios, providing superior customer service to visitors, volunteers and adopters, and facilitating client surveys, agreements, animal to animal intros, post-adoption support / client correspondence (emails / phone calls). 
  • Adhere to/be acquainted with all adoption/client service/foster written policies, procedures, protocols, forms and support materials for adopters, clients, fosters.
  • Assist with in-house adoption promotions and events (as needed) including possible event setup activities and event breakdown.
  • Maintain accurate animal records with most pertinent information to help place animals into suitable homes / foster homes. Animal records include (but are not limited to): past / current medical examinations, on-site behavior observations / notes, in-home behavior observations / notes.
  • Utilize shelter management software to efficiently track animals coming to/leaving pet center, update relevant center documents as required including tracking adoptions for coalition members / communicating with partners when an animal is adopted, etc.

Additional Duties:

  • Proactively report all maintenance / center repair issues
  • Assist with animal bio writing, animal adoption photos and animal adoption videos (as needed)
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership

  • 2 years client service experience / experience interacting with the general public preferred.
  • 2 years previous experience working with cats and dogs required. Must be able to work / have knowledge of cats and dogs (breed, size, age), including those with health concerns / conditions and behavioral challenges
  • Ability to make decisions on behalf of the organization to maintain intake standards for animal admissions approval into the NKLA Pet Adoption Center.
  • Ability to make decisions on behalf of the organization and coalition members as to approval of placement of animals into adopted homes.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Office 365, Internet, Shelterluv shelter software.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.

Physical & Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including (but not limited to): lifting and carrying, reaching, climbing ladders, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Standing and walking for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • Routinely work with animals of all temperaments and medical conditions.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule includes weekends, night and holiday work.
