Best Friends Animal Society is seeking a Senior Writer, Strategic Communications to develop regular content for multiple channels that focuses on critical issues imperative for achieving Best Friends' goal to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters by the year 2025.  The Senior Writer, Strategic Communications will play a key role in writing strategic editorial pieces that inform and influence public opinion, and reach media, policy makers, and other influencers and decision makers. This position will also play a lead role in writing crisis response pieces for both internal and external use. This position will work very closely with the Senior Manager, Strategic Communications, Legislative & Advocacy team, the Director of Public Relations and an agency of record to identify needs, audiences, content ideas and core messages.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and write editorial pieces about critical animal welfare issues that are tied to an overall issues communications strategy and serve to address sensitive and sometimes controversial issues as both a proactive and reactive approach.
  • Develop perspective and point of view messaging in long format pieces to be used for the Best Friends blog, media Opinion Editorials, articles for social media (such as Medium and LinkedIn) and other channels.
  • Be an active participant in weekly content meetings to identify story and editorial opportunities related to strategic needs.
  • Work closely with legislative and advocacy teams, and other program teams to better understand objectives and goals, and to help inform content.
  • Develop strategic language and messaging that resonates strongly with different key audiences, and that leverages the Best Friends voice and style.
  • Communicate with director of business intelligence to ensure that lifesaving data and related information is thoughtfully and appropriately incorporated into messaging and communications.
  • Provide writing guidance and support for Best Friends staff for events, conferences, and key meetings with influencers including crafting messages and speaking points.
  • Stay abreast of latest writing and communications trends related to similar organizations and the animal welfare field to ensure writing excellence and best practices across the organization.
  • Stay informed on what's happening in the news; proactively comb thru major news publications and be well read and informed on a variety of topics, including business, innovation and technology, social good and animal welfare.
  • Ensure work is always consistent with and supportive of Best Friends' organizational brand, voice and style.
  • Provide mentoring and support to fellow writing team members as needed.
  • Travel to priority markets for background meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Other duties as identified and assigned.

Qualifications

  • 3 - 5 years of experience of writing for strategic communications, crisis communications and media relations is required.  
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, journalism, or similar field or equivalent experience.
  • Deep knowledge in animal welfare and related issues is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent news sense and regular consumer of news from major news outlets and publications.
  • Strong story teller with an ability to weave together threads of information, identify trends and translate data.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and an ability to distill complex policy into accessible and digestible language that gets noticed.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, make decisions in a fast paced environment, and adapt to rapidly changing conditions.
  • Must be able to work productively with a broad range of colleagues and stakeholders across the country. Candidate must be willing and able to work collaboratively.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to spend extended periods of time working on a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
