The Background

Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization dedicated exclusively to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. When Best Friends began in 1984, some 17 million animals died every year in America's shelters, simply for not having homes. Today, that number is down to about 740,000. That's incredible progress, but it also means that more than 2,000 wonderful dogs and cats are still losing their lives every day. For 30 years, Best Friends has been running the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals and building effective programs all across the country that reduce the number of animals entering shelters and increase the number who find homes.

Headquartered in Kanab, Utah, Best Friends Animal Society has a $100 million annual budget with more than 800 staff located throughout the country. The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated, energetic and passionate Planned Giving Officer to support the work of Best Friends Animal Society in the LA metro area and throughout CA by cultivating relationships with current and prospective donors to acquire planned gifts to support the work and mission of the organization. As a member of our staff, you will enjoy a common purpose with your colleagues along with challenging and rewarding work that provides a sense of purpose and superior emotional rewards. Best Friends employees are passionate in their love for animals and share the same goals and ideals in helping make the world a better place for them and for us all. Best Friends is in the midst of the "Campaign to Save Them All," a campaign with a goal to make the United States no-kill for dogs and cats by the year 2025.  Achieving this goal is dependent on planned and major gifts as well as gifts from corporations, foundations and the organization's entry level donors. 

Position Summary

The Planned Giving Officer works with donors, their advisors, other outside professionals, and Best Friends staff to research, cultivate, solicit, and contact planned giving prospects to acquire and document present, deferred, and future planned gifts.  This position involves a full range of donor cultivation duties, including working with other development staff to develop planned giving as a critical component of a strategic fundraising plan. This position will work from a home office and travel regionally and nationally.  There is up to a 50% travel commitment for this position.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit current and prospective donors through face-to-face visits, calls, emails and other written communications. Meets standards of performance metrics designed to monitor and evaluate performance - including a commitment and revenue goal and a goal for the number and quality of contacts.
  • Develop a portfolio of up to 200 planned gift prospects and donors. Build and maintain relationships with prospects and donors in portfolio through personal visits, correspondence, e-mail, telephone, etc.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as necessary on personal activity.
  • Steward existing members of Forever Friends, our planned giving recognition society, to confirm and increase their commitments to Best Friends.
  • Collaborate with regional gift advisors, and other development staff to raise larger gifts and blended gifts and advance all fundraising efforts.
  • Work with the Stewardship Department to collaborate on donor stewardship materials, events, and recognition.
  • Maintain working knowledge of institutional priorities that may match donors' interests. These priorities are clearly articulated in the campaign case for support.
  • Develop a familiarity with the Best Friends facility in Mission Hills and Best Friends NKLA facility in West LA to be able to conduct tours with donors and prospects who wish to visit and to share CA Best Friends initiatives.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned by the Planned Giving Manager.
  • Plan, implement and monitor annual goals, growth and opportunities.
  • Input donor information, contacts, prospect management and stewardship efforts into the CRM database tracking system.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, seminars and special training sessions (when appropriate and within the budgetary limits).
  • Monitor professional literature to remain current in the planned giving field.
  • Manage expense reports according to Planned Giving and organizational protocols.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree, or advanced degree a plus, and a minimum of seven years non-profit experience, with formal training in estate planning and planned giving.
  • Working knowledge of estate planning and planned giving strategies and tax treatments (e.g. trusts, charitable gift annuities, beneficiary designated gifts and life insurance).
  • Working knowledge of major giving strategies.
  • Portfolio development that includes moves management.
  • Passion for Best Friends' mission and ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Professional or volunteer experience with animal welfare preferred.
  • High level of communication skills and customer service approach and the proven ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the telephone.
  • Able to work collaboratively with the Development team and peers and program staff across the organization.
  • Comfortable learning new software programs and using online information systems. Familiarity with Blackbaud fundraising database preferred.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to appropriately manage sensitive and confidential information.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be a willing learner with a flexible and adaptable attitude.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be located in close proximity to an airport.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of public transportation and accommodations on behalf of organization business approximately 50% of the time.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to make public presentations to small and large groups.
