Location: Navajo Nation

Summary: The Navajo Nation Program Specialist is responsible for building and managing key relationships on the Navajo Nation, coalition building, and facilitating collaboration. Responsible for identifying the needs of the community and the animals and facilitating lifesaving programs to address these needs. The work performed in this position is significant and critical to the success of achieving NK2025.

Purpose: To provide on the ground programming support, engage the Navajo Nation community, and develop/ maintain key relationships with the goal of expanding resources and increasing lifesaving efforts on the Navajo Nation.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Coalition Building and Community Relationships

  • Serve as primary Best Friends liaison for partner organizations within or surrounding the Navajo Nation; identify key partners and cultivate in-depth relationships with them; and deliver the highest quality of support and customer service in all interactions.
  • Assist in formation and organization of a coalition to support the Navajo Nation: proactively recruit additional key organizations to participate.
  • Create new and maintain existing relationships with animal control, rescue organizations, veterinary resources, and key individuals; represent Best Friends and our brand while building and maintaining these relationships.
  • Work with Animal Control to track data, identify gaps in shelter operations and recommend collaborative solutions. Monitor and report progress of efforts to increase positive outcomes.
  • Identify resource gaps and collaborate with key Best Friends representatives and coalition members to find innovative, scalable solutions.
  • Responsible for maintaining regular communication, providing consultation/ support, and empowering partners and the community to save more lives through various means.

Programming

  • Assist leadership with defining and executing the strategies to achieve lifesaving goals.
  • Provide on the ground support to lifesaving efforts and programming. Organize and participate in community-based events such as spay/neuter and wellness clinics.
  • Lead efforts to engage and involve the community (through door to door campaigning, connecting at local events, etc.)
  • Establish and participate in a transport program to increase lifesaving opportunities. This includes but is not limited to organizing the transport, driving, maintaining vehicle/ equipment, etc.
  • Assist in evaluating grant applications and provide ongoing mentoring of the grant recipients in achieving their goals, as needed.

General

  • Maintain familiarity with animal welfare issues, nationally and within the Navajo Nation.
  • Provide information on a wide variety of animal related subjects and issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in difficult and fast-paced situations.
  • Experience working with rescue and animal control agencies preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in building community relationships.
  • Experience coordinating and participating in animal transports preferred, but not required.
  • Experience and skilled in starting and maintaining effective relationships with customers, clients, partners and fellow staff.
  • Ability to identify and escalate critical issues as necessary.
  • Proven ability to promote a positive work environment and be a team player.
  • Ability to professionally speak about Best Friends activities and positions on issues.
  • Experience reviewing statistical information to inform program direction. 
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; ability to adapt to new situations or processes; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until goals are achieved. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations, positive attitude, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds.  
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands; with accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills; and strong listening skills.
  • Experience / knowledge in the areas of animal behavior, general animal health care, animal rescue, and animal sheltering.
  • Proficient in Google and Microsoft Office applications with ability to learn and use new applications quickly.
  • Weekly travel is expected depending on needs of the role.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to:
    • Routinely lift 50 pounds and perform strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
    • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion.
    • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • This position will require reliable transportation for visits to shelters and rescue partners.
  • Exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
  • Valid driver's license, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department: includes weekends, nights, holidays and on-call work.
