Best Friends Animal Society is looking for dynamic and passionate individuals to join our team of veterinary professionals at the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Los Angeles. Our veterinary team plays a pivotal role in making a difference in the lives of thousands of homeless pets by providing top notch care in our onsite clinic. Position Summary: To be part of a veterinary team providing medical care and high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries to the animals at the Best Friends Lifesaving Center and West LA Pet Adoption Center.

Essential Duties:

  • Surgical induction, anesthesia monitoring and post-op recovery
  • Communicating with public including but not limited to history taking, discharge instructions, etc.
  • Daily cleaning of work areas including, but limited to: sanitizing exam tables, cleaning cages, mopping floors, etc.
  • Preparing and filling prescriptions for center animals under the direction of Lifesaving Center Veterinarians.
  • Perform medical care including, but not limited to: bandaging wounds, phlebotomy, medicating patients, fluid administration, vaccine administration, nail trimming, IV catheter placement, fecal tests, microscopic exams, grooming needs, dental cleanings and extractions, performing euthanasia, etc. under the direction of Lifesaving Center Veterinarians.
  • Data entry in Shelterluv including, but not limited to: entering exams and treatments, surgical procedures, diagnostic tests, etc.
  • Ensuring all medical records are accurate, up to date, and entered in a timely manner in Shelterluv.
  • Ensuring control drugs are logged in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assisting the veterinarian in animal handling and general treatment.
  • Triage of medical cases and initiation of treatments based on protocols written and approved by Lifesaving Center Veterinarians.
  • Daily rounds of hospitalized animals
  • Preparing surgery packs and cleaning surgical equipment.
  • Performing anesthetic machine daily and weekly maintenance.
  • Stocking supplies and alerting the Lead Veterinarian or Medical, Intake, and Transport Manager on inventory needs.
  • Assisting in ordering medical supplied and medications as directed by Lead Veterinarian or Medical, Intake, and Transport Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by Lead Veterinarian or Medical, Intake, and Transport Manager.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Applicants must have a valid California State RVT License and should have a minimum of 1 years work experience in sheltering or veterinary hospitals. Work requires continual attention to detail.   • Animal handling experience and proficiency required.
  • Administrative experience required.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn Microsoft Outlook, Shelterluv, and ADP.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time to include repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor including bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, etc...
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work.
