Summary: The primary function of this role is to ensure every dog in our care has an individualized plan for its enrichment, training, and medical needs. The role will collaborate with the Dogtown Team, Clinic, Outcomes Specialists, and other Sanctuary areas to ensure that animals receive the necessary care for the best outcome possible, and that proper care is used to make sure that each dog has been properly evaluated.

Purpose: This position is responsible for coordinating dog movement and daily assessments with a focus on lifesaving and outcomes. This role will provide guidance, direction, and oversight of dogs in designated areas to reduce length of stay and ensure quality of life. While this role includes responsibilities in all areas of Dogtown, the role may receive intensive assignments in a particular program or area including but not limited to BFAS Lifesaving Centers and/or Network Partners, based on organizational needs.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Work with outcomes and the clinic teams to make sure that every dog, if possible, is available for adoption, transport, and/or foster and is moved in a timely manner to clear housing for additional intakes in order to support our goal of 2025.
  • Problem solve and create innovative solutions to make sure animals do not get 'stuck in the system' and have a plan towards a positive outcome.
  • Support outcomes program operations including but not limited to animal selection, preparation, and records management.
  • Promote, recruit, support, empower, and enable volunteer programs with the goal of utilizing volunteers to expand Best Friends lifesaving capacity.

Leadership & Care

  • Provide leadership, support, mentoring, and coaching for team members and volunteers to ensure all assigned responsibilities are completed, to facilitate maximum lifesaving results, and that each person achieves their fullest potential as contributors to Best Friends mission and goals.
  • When needed serve as a care provider alongside team members, and liaison between Dogtown and other departments, ensuring all department objectives for care, training, and health and behavior monitoring, as established by leadership, are met.
  • Provide regular performance feedback, participate in periodic and annual reviews, participate in the hiring process, and make certain performance metrics are met.


  • Deliver superior customer service and relate to all visitors, adopters, fosters and transfer partners in a friendly, informative and professional manner.
  • Work collaboratively, and with a positive attitude, with all Best Friends' department teams for the care, benefit, promotion and ultimate outcome of all dogs in our care.
  • Identify workflow efficiencies, opportunities for building or department improvements relating to workflow, work areas, facilities, animal movement, and other objectives.
  • Follow Best Friends policies, procedures, and task lists for daily lifesaving outcome assignments, including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years working with dogs in group housing or sheltering living situation.
  • Comfortable with handling all dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs including medicating, socializing, and performing training techniques.
  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until lifesaving outcome goals are achieved; demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software (Best Friends uses Shelterluv), or desire to learn.

Physical & Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to:
    • Routinely lift 65 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
    • Work at a computer or driving a car for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm, and hand motion.
    • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • Daily exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
  • Valid driver's license, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.  
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position includes weekends, nights and holiday work.
