Are you a skilled dog trainer who wants to help save the lives of homeless pets? Do you have significant management experience, great people skills, and a track record of working in a shelter setting, developing plans to help homeless dogs find homes or keep dogs in their homes? If so, then we hope you'll find your career home right here. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is hiring a full-time experienced manager who enjoys people, and is skilled in the latest, most effective and humane dog training techniques. You'll be developing and implementing dog training and behavior plans for many of the over 400 dogs who call the sanctuary their home-between-homes on any given day. While doing so, you'll also be mentoring our fabulous lifesaving and care staff and setting an example for what's possible for training programs in shelters and sanctuaries across the country, which will help us all achieve no-kill nationwide by the year 2025. You'll be a part of history-in-the-making and a new dawn for homeless pets! All from the majestic red rock canyons of southern Utah, where stunning views await you at the dawn of each work day.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 2 - 4 years professional leadership/management experience required with a background working with dog populations in group housing or sheltering living situations preferred
  • 4 - 6 years professional dog training experience with an understanding of training, behavior, and enrichment preferably in a shelter environment, credentials preferred.
  • Dog training and behavior knowledge to include theory, training techniques, and the ability to assess and evaluate new training methods and equipment in animal shelters with measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in various stages of development, each with a unique timeline; ability to manage change and lead teams through change.
  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until lifesaving outcome goals are achieved.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software (Best Friends uses Shelterluv), or desire to learn.
