Position title: Rabbit Caregiver Team Leader

Reports to: Rabbit Manager

Location: Kanab, Utah

Position Summary: In addition to mastering the skills needed to be a Rabbit Caregiver the Caregiver Team Leader will work at an advanced level to oversee the health and well being of the rabbits, assist in the coordination of workflow, control of work procedures and policies, provide training and leadership to the staff and act as a liaison with the department manager.

In addition, the Team Leader will be assigned supervision of caregivers working in the Rabbit Department when manager is not available. The Team Leader will also provide guidance regarding general care issues, as well as problem resolution promoting Best Friends' standard of animal care.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide care and handling for animals that have significant behavioral issues which may include shyness, fearfulness and aggression.
  • Provide care for animals that have significant medical issues which may include a variety of zoonotic disease.
  • To speak knowledgeably and positively about Best Friends, the Rabbit Department and the Best Friends mission to visitors and volunteers.
  • With approval of Rabbit Manager, perform the following functions for team members:
    • Monitor and document performance
    • Participate in Annual Performance Review sessions
    • Provide guidance and coaching to members of the staff on all aspects of their caregiving responsibilities
    • Provide feedback to the Rabbit Department Manager on performance related matters and for performance evaluation purposes.
    • Conduct and/or participate in performance related counseling as needed.
    • Participate in hiring and performance management decisions
    • Disciplinary action up to verbal counseling
  • To act as a team member to coordinate work flow. To be responsible for ensuring all work is performed in an efficient and high quality manner.
  • Assist the Rabbit Manager with communications on rabbit adoptions, when the Rabbit Manager is unavailable. Answer all questions concerning adoptable rabbits, respond to rabbit applications, and ask appropriate questions to potential adopters on rabbit care, housing, and medical needs with assistance of rabbit vet tech.
  • Assist the vet tech with giving medications and supportive care as assigned or needed.
  • To assist with ordering and tracking supplies, food, misc., for the Rabbit Department in coordination with the manager.
  • To gain in depth knowledge about socializing and bonding rabbits and to work toward the goal of finding adoptive homes.
  • To work with the manager to train new hire staff in all aspects of animal care and to provide feedback to the manager.
  • Clean work areas and preserve the physical appearance of the rabbit buildings and grounds.
  • To understand rabbit behavior and to provide an enriching and stress free environment.
  • Cultivate mentoring relationships with team members and act as a mediator and problem solver in times of staff conflict, keeping open communication with the department manager.
  • Provide support for, and participate in, lectures, presentations, and outreach as requested by Manager
  • To regularly perform all Rabbit Caregiver job duties.
  • Maintain staff training records.
  • Other duties as needed.

Skills and Experience:

  • Prior experience caring for rabbits and a good understanding of the best practices of rabbit care preferred.
  • Prior experience with supervising people. Requires very good people skills: clear concise communication, record keeping, fairness, honesty, problem solving abilities and a positive attitude to include strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrates approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office, Shelterluv, Google Mail, Google Drive, etc.
  • Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive work environment.
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills.
  • Proven ability to consider all aspects of a situation and exercise sound judgment in decision making, the communication and implementation of work initiatives and when to involve or inform management
  • Demonstrated ability to give prescribed medications, sub Q fluids, sub Q shots, and skin care with ability to develop advanced level skills such as expressing bladders and wound care over a reasonable period of time.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to drive on organization business.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform repetitive strenuous physical labor in extreme weather conditions to include below freezing and above 110 degrees heat.
  • Bending, stooping, twisting, climbing, raking, mopping, and lifting up to 40 to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Ability to consistently work around allergens such as rabbit fur and hay.
