Position: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

Reports to: Senior Manager, Best Friends Animal Society Atlanta

Location: Atlanta, GA

Position Summary: To be part of the Shelter Veterinary Medicine Team providing medical care, as well as assisting with medical intake of and providing basic medical triage, for the animals in the Best Friends Animal Society - Atlanta Pet Adoption Center (PAC).

 

Essential Duties:

  • Performing new animal intake, including but not limited to: vaccinations, microchipping, blood draws, basic intake examinations.
  • Triage daily caregiver observation forms and alert Shelter Medicine Veterinarian as needed.
  • Daily walk-throughs in the center, monitoring general health of animals.
  • Monitor before and after medical procedures.
  • Communicating with public for foster appointment, or adoptions follow ups. (Discharge instructions, follow-up instructions to adopters etc.)
  • Daily cleaning of work areas including but not limited to, cleaning cages, mopping floors, etc.
  • Preparing and filling prescriptions for center animals under the direction of Center Veterinarian. Performing inventory of medical supplies.
  • Perform medical care including but not limited to wrapping wounds, blood draws, medicating, nail trimming, IV catheter placement, SQ and IV fluids, fecal tests, microscopic exams, grooming needs, etc. independently.
  • Administering prescribed medications, both oral and injectable.
  • Assisting the veterinarian in animal handling and general treatment.
  • Stocking supplies and working with the Senior Manager on inventory needs.
  • Other duties as assigned by Senior Veterinarian, or Senior Management.
  • Data entry of medical notes, laboratory results, etc.
  • Schedule medical appointment with external veterinary sources. When needed,
  • transport animals.
  • Provide functional supervision of Veterinary Technician Assistant.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Applicants must have a valid Georgia State RVT License and should have a minimum of 1 years work experience in sheltering or veterinary hospitals.

  • Animal handling experience and proficiency required.
  • Administrative experience required.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn Google calendar, docs, medical management systems, and email and ADP.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, and holiday work. Must have flexible schedule.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Ability to drive a van/commercial vehicle.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and handle all animals including cats and dogs.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Will be required to visit off-site Best Friends programs and events.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: walking, hiking, bending, lifting, carrying, twisting, reaching, stooping and squatting.
  • Ability to effectively and safely handle a variety of animals and spend extensive periods of time with those animals in close quarters.
