Position Summary: The Cat Caregiver will work within a team setting to oversee the health, well being, and general care of the cats at the center and help to facilitate cat adoptions.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities Include:

  • Feeding the cats in the center according to the established protocol including bottle feeding and tube feeding neonates as assigned.
  • Monitor cat eating habits, make food adjustments as necessary and report to the supervisor when there are changes in appetite or weight fluctuations including weighing and recording on charts for neonates.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, up-to-date records for all the cats in the building.
  • Clean in accordance with posted protocols to include, but not limited to (this includes all cat areas: of age, neonates and weaned, moms and babies, etc.):
  • Dishes
  • Litter Boxes
  • Laundry
  • Cages
  • Cat Rooms
  • Floors
  • Walls
  • Check medications against "med" sheets for accuracy, document error(s), and obtain correct medications as applicable.
  • Observe medical/behavioral issues with cats, and discuss with supervisor.
  • Ensure all cats have accurate information and quality photos on their cage card. Report to supervisor if anything is missing or inaccurate.
  • Assist with writing "bios" for cats in the adoption program.
  • Assist with photographing cats in the adoption program.
  • Ensure all cats have "bio" and photos on website.
  • Enhance the physical and emotional well-being of the cats.
  • Assist the public with providing information on the cats and help potential adopters with a "Meet 'n Greets."
  • Maintain inventory of all necessary cat food, medical supplies, and cleaning supplies.
  • Report all maintenance/repair issues to supervisor.
  • Work closely with and supervise volunteers.
  • Help to determine better and more effective means to promote and adopt our cats.
  • Prepare animals for mobile adoptions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Veterinary Service Manager or Executive Director.

Required skills and experience:

  • Work with a positive outlook, upbeat, energetic and taking initiative.
  • Strong desire to work with cats. Previous experience working with cats preferred.
  • Must be able to work with all cats, including those with health concerns/conditions, including but not limited to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), and ringworm.
  • Experience interacting with the general public and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Previous experience handling cats a plus.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 40-50 pounds.
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Effectively handle dogs and cats.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
  • Lifting and handling animals of varying sizes and breeds, bending, stooping and walking on a daily basis.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work.
