Position: Community Outreach Specialist - Best Friends Visitor Center
Reports to: Manager - Best Friends Visitor Center
Location: Kanab, Utah

Schedule: Thursday - Saturday, 8 am - 5 pm & Sunday - Monday, 9 am - 6 pm (days off are Tuesday/Wednesday). Hours and weekend days would change in the winter (November - February). 

Position summary: Best Friends Visitor Center, located in downtown Kanab, is a social center and community resource for animal enthusiasts, people with pets and adventure seekers. Visitors enter into a welcoming, home-like environment where they are greeted by friendly, well-informed employees and volunteers of Best Friends. The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for providing each visitor with a level of engagement specific to their own lives--whether they be tourists, visitors from one of our program cities, one of our partner organizations or local residents.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located approximately 5 miles from the town of Kanab, Utah, whereby we receive approximately 25,000 – 30,000 annual visitors. The Community Outreach Specialist located at Best Friends Visitor Center in town are often the first point of introduction to Best Friends with our visitors traveling through Kanab. The ambassador plays an integral role in establishing this contact whereby they will encourage and inspire visitors to visit the Sanctuary and offer relevant information about the mission of Best Friends.

This Specialist will exhibit good communication skills, enthusiasm, and cheerfulness. Being current on all issues regarding Sanctuary happenings, Best Friends mission and any new organizational developments on the horizon is a must. They will also demonstrate an appreciation for the community of Kanab and its residents, by maintaining a positive relationship with local businesses and others throughout the community. The Specialist will do this through the implementation of specific activities, events, and services that make a positive impact on the pets and their people in Kanab and the surrounding areas.

The Community Outreach Specialist will demonstrate understanding of the link between Best Friends culture and mission and the important role it plays in helping to inspire and influence our visitors to join us in our life saving work to Save Them All.

Essential Duties:

  • Greet all visitors in a warm and inviting manner, while engaging them in conversation about the Sanctuary as well as Best Friends life-saving mission across the country including events and Network Partner information.
  • Invite and encourage all visitors to become members of Best Friends Animal Society and to join in the mission.
  • Engage visitors in the Best Friends Visitor Center and provide accurate information and direction as it pertains to their requests while promoting opportunities for engagement in Best Friends offerings which include Legacies, Capital Campaigns, Memberships, Regional events, and a host of other offerings.
  • Manage all duties associated with reception at the Best Friends Visitor Center, including but not limited to, answering phone calls, scheduling tours, providing assistance with volunteer sign-up, communicating our adoption process, receiving donations, providing directions, providing assistance with Best Friends Visitor Center technology and contacting and coordinating with other departments at the Sanctuary.
  • Be informed about local community happenings, events, and available activities that will enhance the visitors' experience in the Kanab area.
  • Maintain and build relationships with local businesses by engaging in ongoing communication and in-person visits. 
  • Assist the Visitor Center Manager in coordinating events, activities, and services that increase traffic to the Visitor Center. 
  • Participate in local and regional events to increase visitation to the Sanctuary, as requested. 
  • Provide transportation services for special events at the Sanctuary and/or in town, such as the annual blessing, all staff week, Discovery Weekend, pre-or post-conference Sanctuary visits, movie nights at the Landing, etc.
  • Complete daily Best Friends Visitor Center operational duties, maintaining a clean and clutter free environment and other assigned tasks as requested.
  • Transport Sanctuary animals to and from the Best Friends Visitor Center, as needed. 
  • Provide proper care for adoptable animals at the Best Friends Visitor Center including but not limited to feeding, cleaning and socializing.
  • Transport & engage visitors from Best Friends Visitor Center to the Sanctuary as needed. Conduct a scripted tour when provided. 
  • Work closely with volunteers who wish to provide their services and time in a congenial, informative and friendly manner.
  • Contribute to the achievement of departmental goals.
  • Cross train and provide coverage in other V&VE departments, as needed.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Self-motivation to keep informed of facts about Best Friends and the local community news, events and informational material in order to accurately relay them to visitors.
  • Willingness and ability to work weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Demonstrate ability to be a team player 
  • Ability to work with distractions in a busy work environment.
  • Proficient computer and technology skills a must. Microsoft Office and Google Docs preferred. Must be a quick learner when it comes to new technology and equipment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record for past three (3) years. 
  • Ability to drive a 14-passenger van safely through varied weather and road conditions. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time. 
  • Repetitive bending, twisting and stepping into and out of passenger van. 
  • Ability to work in close proximity of coworkers.
  • Ability to see clearly, read road signs and safely view changes in terrain. 
  • Must be able to spend extended periods of time in close contact with all types of animals in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to handle through provided training, animals of multiple specie including but not limited to cats, birds, rabbits, dogs, etc.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
