The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated, energetic and passionate Planned Giving Associate to support the work of Best Friends Animal Society across the country by qualifying prospects and cultivating relationships with current and prospective donors primarily by phone, mail and email to help secure planned gifts.

Position Summary

The Planned Giving Associate works with planned giving prospects and donors to qualify, cultivate and steward relationships.  The Planned Giving Associate also supports the Planned Giving Officers with research, qualification calls and correspondence to cultivate planned giving prospects and help to secure planned gifts.  The Planned Giving Associate also helps gift officers organize visits with prospects and donors.  This position involves a full range of donor cultivation duties, including learning an individual's interests, capacity and potential for helping Best Friends meet its goals.  Performance metrics will include number of discovery contacts made and qualifications with an emphasis on donors added to a gift officer's portfolio.  This position could either be based at the Sanctuary in Kanab, UT or could work from a home office. There is a limited amount of travel required - up to a 20% travel commitment for this position.


  • Perform initial qualification of planned giving prospects by using research and analytic tools as well as personal contact.  
  • Cultivate and communicate with current and prospective donors through calls, emails and other written communications.
  • Steward existing members of Forever Friends, our planned giving recognition society, to confirm and increase their commitments to Best Friends.
  • Maintain working knowledge of institutional priorities that may match donors' interests. These priorities are clearly articulated in the campaign case for support.
  • Input donor information, contacts, prospect management and stewardship efforts into the CRM database tracking system.
  • Monitor professional literature to remain current in the planned giving field.
  • Back up other members of the Planned Giving team when they are on leave or travel.
  • Participate in Development Department activities as required.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned by the Director of Planned Giving.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of three years work experience in fundraising, with formal training in sales, estate planning or planned giving or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of planned and major giving strategies and the ability to educate and inform donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
  • Experience conducting discovery calls or outreach by phone.
  • High level of communication skills and customer service approach and the proven ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person.
  • Work autonomously and be self-directed and self-motivated.
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Passion for Best Friends' mission and ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Able to work collaboratively with the Development team and peers and program staff across the organization.
  • Comfortable learning new software programs and using online information systems. Familiarity with Blackbaud database preferred.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
