Position Title:  Chief Financial Officer

Reports to:  Chief Operating Officer

Location:  Kanab

 

Position Summary:  

The Chief Financial Officer position is a critical role in the senior leadership of the organization.  You are ultimately responsible for ensuring that the Finance and Accounting service needs of the managers, staff and Board members are effectively met both now and as the organization evolves.  You are ultimately responsible for building commitment within the organization to the value of operating with sound financial planning and operating practices.  As a member of senior leadership, you will contribute to the evolution of our strategic plan and you will represent the organization on financial and accounting matters to our donors and key third-party partners and service providers.  We need you to live in Kanab, which is an opportunity to experience the advantages of a smaller community and to enjoy some of the most beautiful landscape and natural settings in the U.S and the world.  This position is a very unusual position through which you can use your motivation, knowledge, competencies and experience to do amazing good:  to help Save Them All.

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Understand the Finance and Accounting needs of the Best Friends managers, staff, Finance Committee members, and Board of Directors.
  2. Ensure the delivery of effective services to meet those needs, including particularly in the areas of:
    • financial planning and analysis
    • internal control, transaction processing and financial reporting
    • financial asset and liability management
    • safety and risk management
    • business planning, analysis and development
  3. Develop and implement a program that continually generates improvement in the delivery of the services.
  4. Champion and support the professional and personal development of your direct reports and the entire Finance and Accounting staff.
  5. Maintain effective relationships with other members of the senior leadership team, the members of the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors, and outside service providers and partners.

Experience and Qualifications: 

  1. Must be personally committed to the Mission and Guiding Principles of the Best Friends Animal Society. Please refer to http://bestfriends.org/about-best-friends/our-mission
  2. At least 10 years in the CFO or equivalent position in a non-profit organization.
  3. Bachelor's degree required in Accounting, Finance or an equivalently-relevant area of study. Advanced degree preferred.
  4. Strong experience with nonprofit accounting, financial reporting and tax reporting.
  5. Direct experience with the Financial Planning & Analysis, Controllership, and Treasurer functions. Working knowledge of the Safety and Risk Management and Business Development functions.
  6. Experience with performance management systems and staff professional development.
  7. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  8. Experience in working with the founders of a business is a plus.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal personality characteristics for this position would be a team player who is positive, pro-active, personable, energetic, collaborative and tactful.
  10. Must be able to work in a dynamic environment and have the ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  11. Capability to provide a positive approach to managing change and challenging situations.
  12. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  13. Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on key animal welfare and No Kill issues.
  14. Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.

Physical Requirements: 

  1. Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
