We are looking for an experienced internal communications and PR manager to first and foremost, spearhead our internal communications strategy for an organization that is spread out all over the country. Bring new and fresh ideas as well as best practices of how to execute and measure an internal communications program.

Position Summary: Reporting to the Director PR and Content Marketing, the Manager, Internal Communications and PR will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for internal communications that's aligned with organizational priorities and connects staff with Best Friends' culture, history and goals. Additionally, this position will act as second-in-command for the public relations team offering creative and campaign oversight as needed. The position involves developing and facilitating senior leadership communications (via live and/or recorded web broadcasts, and other innovative forums), oversight of internal news assets, content development and curation, and employee feedback and engagement efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with PR Director and executive advocate to develop, implement and roll out a comprehensive strategic plan for internal communications (IC).
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on current IC assets (monthly newsletter, weekly email, all staff emails, etc.).
  • Research and recommend third party measurement tools for IC efforts.
  • Create roll out plan for all staff town halls including cadence, technology needed and topics.
  • Analyze and report on effectiveness of tactics.
  • Ability to be nimble/flexible and change courses as needed to be effective.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information and use discretion handling sensitive information.
  • Work with organization stakeholders to consult on and develop IC strategies as needed (HR, division leaders, campaign leaders, etc.).
  • Collaborate with PR Director to create an annual public relations plan that will maximize the Best Friends' public relations resources against achieving organizational objectives.
  • Serve as a media spokesperson for Best Friends Animal Society as needed.
  • Develop, update and socialize internal communications plan for emergencies affecting the organization.
  • Assist in message development and external communications strategy surrounding Best Friends' response to emergencies (e.g., natural disasters) and other crises.
  • Lead team in development of ideas for original thematic content (blog posts, case studies, white papers, videos, infographics, presentations and the like) that can be utilized across a variety of channels.
  • Ensure content marketing ideas are on-brand, consistent in terms of style, quality and tone of voice, and optimized for search and user experience.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:

  • BA / BS in Communications, PR or related field.
  • 10 years communications experience including at least five leading internal communications efforts.
  • Working knowledge of issues in animal welfare.
  • Experience managing a remote team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Track record as an effective manager and inspirational team leader.
  • Comfortable making tough decisions and navigating internal organizational politics.
  • Ability to work seamlessly across functions and with teams in different locations in the US, across time zones.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Expert with MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and PR tools such as Cision and Critical Mention.
  • Flexible and enjoys handling a variety of tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended work at a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Periodic trips to various out-of-state locations such as Kanab, Utah which may require use of public transportation.
