Position:  Project Manager I

Reports to:  Senior Manager of Application Services

Location:   Kanab, Utah or Remote

If you have IT project management experience, this is a job that could change your life. No cubicles in sterile high rises here.  This is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, nestled in some of the most beautiful outdoors on earth. And all around you are the animals whose lives you'll be helping to save by using your organizational and analysis skills that help Best Friends reach out about the need to Save Them All.  But you'll be working with a team of people who care as you do about using their skills for the benefit of pets without families.

Position Summary: A candidate at this level would typically lead small to medium level projects.  Responsible for all aspects of project analysis and management.  Collects and documents business requirements.  Manages application projects and ensures successful on-time, on-budget delivery of these projects. Responsibilities include determining project scope, timelines, tracking project progress and measuring outcomes. Collaborates with all internal departments, project stakeholders, and vendors to ensure proper alignment to project strategy, budget and objectives. Assists in the management of change to the organization.  Provides progress reports to the IT Governance Committee.  Will receive regular guidance from both management and senior level project managers.


Project Initiation (40%): 

  • Assists business units in developing project requests with ROI, scope, funding requirements and timeline for approval and prioritization by the IT Governance Committee.
  • Collects and documents requirements, business processes and use cases to ensure project meets business needs.
  • Makes recommendation on process to the business units to ensure effective use of systems.

Project Execution (40%): 

  • Develop project charters and plans specifying goals, strategy, dependencies, staffing, scheduling, risk management/contingency plans, communication plans and allocation of resources.
  • Build the work breakdown structure including scheduled deliverables and project milestones.
  • Manage functional and technology resources towards achievement of project goals and timelines, holding them accountable for deliverables.
  • Manage project risk and issues taking corrective action where required. Report on progress to the IT governance committee.

Change Management (15%): 

  • Develop formal change plans based on project impacts.
  • Assist business units and technology personnel in managing change across the organization.
  • Report on change management progress to the IT governance committee.

Best Practices (5%):

  • Keep up to date on business analysis/project management and change best practices and put them into practice within the organization.

Skills and Experience:

  • A baccalaureate degree in business, computer science, information systems or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience managing information technology projects.
  • A minimum of 1 year of Business Analysis experience.
  • Exposure to business process modeling and management.
  • PMI Certification a plus.
  • Experience managing small to medium level projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exposure to formal change management methodologies, e.g. Prosci, a plus
  • CRM experience in a nonprofit environment a plus.
  • Experience with Financial Systems a plus.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare or shelter management a plus.
  • Ability to learn to professionally advocate Best Friends' mission and position on issues.

 Physical Requirements:

  • Able to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
