Position Summary: The Foster Program Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, training, retention and daily management of 750 animals placed through foster homes for the year within the LA area to support the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center and NKLA initiative. The foster program targets underage kittens, feline moms with babies, underage puppies or canine moms with babies (as needed), long-term resident animals and behavioral/medical wellness animal candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for recruiting foster homes through outreach efforts and hosting foster orientations
  • Providing basic medical and care giving training to foster parents based on animal(s) going into foster homes
  • Ensuring all fosters are trained and performing in conjunction with all animal care policies and procedures of BFAS when animals are in their home
  • Maintain frequent communication with foster homes via email, phone and in person to keep them updated on current foster needs and opportunities
  • Act as a point of contact (day and night) and maintain constant communication with active foster families to ensure animals receive necessary care and are returned to the Pet Adoption Center when appropriate
  • Handling foster complaints, conflict and conflict resolution issues pertaining to Best Friends with oversight of supervisor
  • Perform routine vaccines, deworming and microchips for all neonatal fosters, and perform basic check up wellness exams for routine sheltering illnesses with assistance from shelter medical staff
  • Responsible for scheduling and approving all medical procedures with either the on site clinic or off-site vets, including after-hour medical emergencies
  • Creating and maintaining a database of available foster homes based on skills, experience and expressed interests, manage hours/foster days entries in database
  • Hosting matchmaking sessions for foster homes to send foster home with animal(s) that match their skills, experiences, abilities and expressed interests
  • Field and respond to all inquiries on both the foster program email and phone line, including after-hour emergency phone calls from existing foster homes
  • Provide ongoing guidance/mentorship and support to foster homes. This can include: training, providing supplies, giving medical advice, emergency care support and also helping to maintain the morale of foster supporters.
  • Provide as-needed support for the kitten nursery located at the Pet Adoption Center, which will include some basic care giving tasks as well as being able provide guidance and advice.
  • Work with coalition partners and nursery lead to transfer out animals to their organization from our neonatal program and/or other departments.
  • Perform any additional tasks as requested by the Veterinary Services Manager or Executive Director

Skills & Experience

  • Ability to act decisively in emergency situations – making medical care decisions for neonatal kittens and animals with special needs
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, and experience working with animal welfare fostering programs is preferred – experience working for or with a humane organization in a foster care role is a plus
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations and make difficult decisions under pressure.
  • Must be able to work independently and use good judgement in the decision making process
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Strong interpersonal skills – outgoing, professional, upbeat and energetic, team player, personable, takes initiative, and able to get along well with a variety of people.
  • Demonstrate affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the work place.
  • Ability to work with animals with unknown disposition and temperament, including those that may exhibit medical and/or behavior problems
  • Ability to show compassion and empathize with foster families
  • Proven attention to detail with organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in the animal welfare movement preferred.
  • Ability to work courteously and cooperatively with volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Prior experience as a Veterinary Technician or relevant education or certification a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues.

Physical Requirements

  • Extended work at a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Periodic trips to various out-of-state locations such as Kanab, Utah which may require use of public transportation.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor including bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, etc..
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work.
