Position title: Volunteer and Foster Coordinator, Best Friends - Atlanta

Reports to:  State Engagement Manager in Georgia, Best Friends - Atlanta

Location: Atlanta, GA


Position Summary: The Volunteer and Foster Coordinator is responsible for the daily coordination of volunteer activity and needs of the Best Friends Atlanta program.  This includes the recruiting, training, placement and coordination of volunteers for the Best Friends Atlanta program, including but not limited to Events, Promotions, Community Cat Program, Foster Homes and the Pet Adoption Center.

Essential Duties:

  • Work with Best Friends staff to determine volunteer position needs and develop position descriptions and proactively  recruit and train volunteers in a timely manner based on skills, experience and interest for both onsite and offsite activities.
  • Prioritize, assign and review work assignments for volunteers.
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries by email and phone daily, communicating volunteer opportunities and organization updates.
  • Identify and resolve volunteer related issues, conflict and performance concerns in conjunction with program managers and supervisors
  • Provide guidance and instruction to program managers and staff on best practices in volunteer training and management
  • Act as the primary liaison to foster parents, assisting with questions and ensuring their compliance in finding permanent placement for their foster pets.  
  • Ensure all foster parent paperwork and inspections are in compliance with the Georgia Department of Agriculture regulations.
  • Responsible for managing the volunteer database. Create and organize shifts, trainings and orientations. Ensure volunteer profiles are complete and volunteers are trained in online center use.
  • Responsible for all data entry of volunteers' statistics, including monthly reports, event and shift hour time sheets, training attendance, placements and biographical information using volunteer database.
  • Assist staff with volunteer relations and management, to empower them to work with volunteers in their department. Assist staff with identifying tasks appropriate for volunteers and developing volunteer roles and job descriptions.
  • Coordinate volunteer orientations and department specific training. Ensuring all new volunteers are adequately introduced to the organization, our mission and goals and are trained per our policies and procedures.
  • Cultivate relationships with the animal welfare community, other non-profit organizations, student groups, animal services and community advocates in efforts to recruit new volunteers.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager develop and implement required safety protocols per program and project.
  • Maintain frequent communication with volunteers to keep them engaged; Motivate them to continue with the program, potentially accepting leadership roles; maintain a database of core volunteers and their strengths and interest so  that they can receive special recognition or accept responsibilities based on their proven dedication. Includes volunteer appreciation, engagement and retention.
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers for large scale events and special projects. Coordinate orientations and trainings for these events and projects.
  • Cultivate and deepen volunteer relationships to ensure positive outcomes and experiences and continued impactful engagement. Through these efforts provide recommendations to managers and supervisors.
  • With input from the Senior Manager create and implement recruitment strategies and tactics to support program needs. Observe and identify volunteering trends, new recruitment resources and provide recommendations for areas of improvement.
  • Promote positive morale, creativity and teamwork among volunteers and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • 2 year previous experience managing and recruiting volunteers, preferably for a nonprofit or community organization.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Strong people, communication (written and verbal), time management and organizational skills. Ability to consistently meet deadlines and must have excellent attention to detail.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, professional, positive and be able to get along well with a variety of people. Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends Animal Society positions on issues.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, presentations, google programs and volunteer databases. Must be comfortable learning and using online information systems.
  • Resourceful, roll up the sleeves attitude. The successful candidate must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically demonstrate flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.  
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, and holiday work.  Must have flexible schedule.


Physical Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Ability to drive a van/commercial vehicle.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and handle all animals including cats and dogs.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Will be required to visit off-site Best Friends programs and events.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: walking, hiking, bending, lifting, carrying, twisting, reaching, stooping and squatting.
  • Ability to effectively and safely handle a variety of animals and spend extensive periods of time with those animals in close quarters.
