Position:  System Engineer I

Reports to:   Director, IT Infrastructure, Security and Operations

Location:  Kanab, UT

Position Summary: Responsible for system engineering, maintenance, and support of the physical and virtual environments including Cloud and Datacenter. Responsible for  configuration, maintenance, and operations of information systems and storage environments in both Datacenter and Cloud (IaaS). The system engineer will also design, architect, and troubleshoot systems and applications to identify and correct performance and other operational issues. Work with technology teams to develop and maintain information security policies, security standards, and system engineering guidelines and procedures.


Systems Engineering (40%): 

  •  Assisting with System Architecture, Design and Engineering in developing systems and solutions for systems, applications and web services in both Cloud and local Data Center environments.
  •  Assisting with coordinating and scheduling the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems software, database management systems, applications, and application development environments.
  •  Assisting with providing architecture and design guidelines for business system and system security. 
  • Evaluates, tests and apply upgrades and patches to systems and applications on a timely basis as necessary to maintain system and application security.
  • Assisting with server hardware installation, maintenance, problem resolution, failure recovery, disaster recovery and backups. Provides timely response for production system infrastructure requests and outages.


System Support (35%):  

  • Provide System Engineering and design support for Network Engineering projects, Help Desk tickets and support requests. This includes installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and upgrading system, servers, software, and peripheral equipment.
  • Receive, assign, prioritize, document and actively resolve end user help requests. 

Security Engineering (15%):

  • Provide solutions and input for defining compliance and monitoring metrics for system security as well as security scanning of both applications and systems for vulnerabilities.
  • Design, document and maintain system security policies and procedures as well as monitor compliance in conjunction with security service providers and security vendors.
  • Minimize and mitigate risks introduced by existing and new information technologies and services through diligent System Engineering best practices. 

Project Management (10%): 

  • Assisting with completing complex technical design projects, project management assignments and new system implementations.
  • Assisting with the coordination and management of projects between technical and non-technical staff and organizational departments. 
  • Analyze business technical service needs and propose solutions. 
  • Plan and assist with the technical implementation of necessary technical solutions.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum Bachelors degree in a technology field, or equivalent experience required.
  • 6+ years of hands-on IT experience, supporting Systems Infrastructure technologies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and experience with current Cloud technologies such as Amazon (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft (Azure), Google Cloud Platform, and Data Center colocation.
  • Experience and knowledge of services such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Experience and knowledge of Microsoft and Linux Operating Systems
  • Understanding of application architecture and best practices.
  • Experience working with VMware environments. Benefiting from an understanding of Disaster Recovery design and testing.
  • Understanding of SAN storage environments and SAN network infrastructure.
  • Understanding of securing systems and assisting with application security best practices.
  • Experience with web applications and development frameworks.
  • Hands on skills related to installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting and repairing software, hardware and peripherals.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts and procedures to non-technical users.
  • Outstanding communications and initiative with excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation to travel on organization business.
  • Flexibility to work weekend, holiday, and evening hours as needed in addition to normal business hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
