Location: Kanab, Utah

Purpose Summary: Leads the Utility Team in the field to enhance and support the flow of the Sanctuary's various utilities: water, power (including solar), waste water, propane, and fiber optic (internet & phone) services productively and in a safe manner. The Team Lead is also responsible for assisting the Utilities Manager in delegating and coordinating the work of the department and ensuring it is completed in an efficient and high-quality manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for directing the team on the day-to-day basis in the delivery of the Sanctuary's utility services.
  • Actively observe the work being performed by the team members and assist the Utilities Manager in the ongoing performance review process.
  • Participate in leadership and staff meetings to organize, prioritize and inform.
  • Oversee the installation and maintenance of the Sanctuary's water infrastructure including: water lines, wells, springs, pumps and associated delivery systems and maintain all water quality tests and documents related to water rights' use.
  • Oversee the installation, maintenance and repair of the Sanctuary's electrical infrastructure including: transformers, primary and secondary electrical cables, building service panels, solar installations, and in-building electrical circuits.
  • Prioritize, schedule and delegate utility department work including the installation, maintenance and repair of all Sanctuary wastewater systems, fiber-optic cables, phone lines, propane lines and associated delivery systems.
  • Retrieve and assign customer work orders from the Help Desk system and respond to all utility related inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Utilities Manager in purchasing and effectively managing the department's budget and resources.
  • Oversee in cooperation with the Utilities Manager the enforcement of safe work practices and ensure team compliance.
  • Teach team members best practices in the delivery of various utilities services.
  • Assist the Utilities Manager with the planning, budgeting and installation of designated utility projects in collaboration with engineer(s) and contractor(s).
  • Responsible for ensuring all Blue Stake requests at the Sanctuary are completed by the utilities team in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Responsible for maintaining up-to-date utility meter reading spreadsheets.
  • Responsible for maintaining an up-to-date ArcGIS file that includes the location of all Sanctuary utilities.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of heavy/ specialized equipment and tools and ensuring their proper maintenance.
  • Responsible for preventive maintenance and the upkeep of all utility systems.
  • On-call utility support for organization sponsored events requiring utility expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in utility service delivery and system maintenance
  • Previous experience in a leadership and/ or supervisory role is required
  • Experience operating heavy equipment (backhoe, excavator, trencher, skid steer) and utility locating equipment
  • Must have proven basic electrical experience
  • Must have proven basic plumbing experience
  • Must have proven basic wastewater system experience.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand/ portable power tools and equipment safely
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills required; ArcGIS, MS excel, email, calendar & internet applications
  • Maintain a positive attitude in a fast-pace environment and adapt to challenging situations
  • Upbeat and energetic team player willing to take the initiative to complete or oversee delegated work assignments that meet customer expectations
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must have a valid driver's license with a 3-year clean driving record
  • Obtain/ maintain a Class-A CLD or obtain within 6 months of hire date
  • Must have a Utah Water Operator Certification Level 1 (or greater) or obtain within 1-year of hire date
  • Have own transportation or reliable means of getting to and from work

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry 80 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors for prolonged periods in all weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
  • Must make use of all provided personal protection equipment (PPE) when required by Best Friend's workplace safety policy.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including, but not limited to: climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
