Position title: Veterinarian - Pet Adoption Center

Reports to: Senior Manager - Georgia

You became a veterinarian to help save the lives of animals, and to give them the best possible quality of life. And nowhere can you do that more than at the Pet Adoption Center in Atlanta, where we pride ourselves on offering homeless pets though they may have been rejected or abandoned or treated as throw-aways the same top-of-the-line care that animals with the most loving families would have their vets provide.

Position Summary: This role will support the Pet Adoption Center by ensuring that all animals received are prepared for adoption or transport  in timely manner by performing intake, medical, diagnostic exams and vaccines. This position is also responsible, alongside appointed staff, for coordinating timely and accurate intake and medical record keeping and communication regarding the cats and dogs in the adoptions program.

Essential Duties:

  • Work with Senior Manager - Georgia to develop and execute shelter medicine plan focusing on herd populations, health management for shelter medicine, status reports, budgets and comprehensive documentation as it relates to Georgia programs.
  • Work with senior manager to establish treatment protocols and medical intake protocols.
  • Responsible for entering their performed exams, medical, diagnostic treatments and any other pertinent data in shelter management software.
  • Performing a variety of surgeries as required.   This includes, but is not limited to, mid to high volume spay and neuter, abdominal exploratories, mass removals, and may include orthopedic surgeries as well.
  • Health Certificates for interstate travel for the transport program
  • Receive and prioritize all medical needs for Best Friends program animals.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of medical appointments for animals in foster care with the Foster Coordinator and PAC Operations Manager.
  • Starting and completing medical treatment and prescriptions in adherence of medical protocols based on organizational SOPs.
  • Schedule and track follow-up and re-check appointments for animals at the center.
  • Work within budgets as directed by executive team, plan and coordinate supplies, equipment and facility needs; oversee the ordering and inventory of medical supplies and medicine.
  • Available for consults after-hours to determine if an animal needs to go to the emergency clinic
  • Responsible for maintaining the control substance logs in adherence to Best Friends, Department of Agriculture, and DEA policies.  
  • Inform procedures and overall protocols of adoptions programs guided by the adoption program SOPs and Best Friends' Medical Director.
  • Keeping abreast of veterinary concerns and trends in the animal welfare movement.
  • Advocate for animals, educate the public, and Best Friends Animal Society staff on all aspects of animal health.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience / Requirements:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD) or equivalent required.
  • Accredited through the USDA APHIS National Veterinary Accreditation Program.
  • Knowledge of and passion in continuing education performed in the field of shelter medicine, high quality, high volume spay/neuter and herd medicine.
  • Understanding and ability to perform herd medicine practice.
  • Must be able to work with and handle all cats and dogs, including those with health concerns/conditions and as well as behaviors issues.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a license in good standing with the state veterinary board upon hire.
  • Work experience preferred, but new graduates will be considered for the position.
  • Proficiency in spays and neuters of dogs and cats.
  • Be comfortable working with and/or around community (feral) cats.
  • License or application for license with Drug Enforcement Agency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff on all levels. Proven written and oral presentation skills.
  • Interest in continuing veterinary education and exploration of new technologies and treatment modalities.
  • Flexible work schedule with emergency on-call duties as needed. May need to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends positions on issues.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail.  Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated good working habits in an environment that requires multitasking and multiple demands on time.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
  • Lifting animals of all sizes, bending, stooping and walking on a daily basis.
  • Working at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
