Position: Senior Manager, Internal Communications

Reports to: Director of Publications and Creative Assets

Location: Kanab (UT), Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, New York City or Atlanta preferred


Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Publications and Creative Assets, the Senior Manager, Internal Communications will be responsible for keeping the staff of Best Friends informed and motivated. You will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for internal communications that's aligned with organizational priorities and connects staff, who live and work in many different locations, with Best Friends' culture, history and goals. The position involves developing and facilitating senior leadership communications (via live and/or recorded web broadcasts, and other innovative forums), oversight of internal communications assets, content development and curation, writing and editing internal communication pieces and employee feedback and engagement efforts.


  • Work with leadership to develop, implement and roll out a comprehensive strategic plan for internal communications (IC).
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on current IC assets (monthly newsletter, weekly email, all staff emails, etc.).
  • Ensure organizational initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to employees and stakeholders.
  • Plan, edit and write content for a variety of internal communications mediums, such as staff intranet, monthly newsletter or regular email bulletin. You may also be required to work on the layout of content.
  • Research and recommend third party measurement tools for IC efforts.
  • Create roll out plan for all staff town halls including cadence, technology needed and topics.
  • Analyze and report on effectiveness of tactics.
  • Ability to be nimble/ flexible and change courses as needed to be effective including taking feedback from staff and executives and adjusting content accordingly.
  • Draft messages or scripts from senior executives for presentation to employees in written or spoken form
  • Ensure internal communications messages are consistent across all mediums and for different departments of the organization
  • Ensure internal communication messages are consistent with external communication messages
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information and use discretion handling sensitive issues and information.
  • Work with organization stakeholders to consult on and develop IC strategies as needed (HR, division leaders, campaign leaders, etc.).
  • Develop, update and socialize internal communications plan for emergencies affecting the organization as part of an internal task force.
  • Assist in message development and external communications strategy surrounding Best Friends' response to emergencies (e.g., natural disasters) and other crises.
  • High comfort level working across different team environments in high stress, quick turnaround situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:

  • BA / BS in Communications or related field.
  • 10 years communications experience including at least five leading internal communications efforts.
  • Working knowledge of issues in animal welfare.
  • Experience managing or working with a remote team.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills as well as the journalistic ability to source stories from employees
  • Strong speaking skills as you are likely to be called on to give presentations to staff. Internal communications managers need sensitivity to an organization's goals and values and the ability to relay them to employees
  • Interpersonal skills: You need good interpersonal and relationship-building skills in order to work with communications and HR departments. You also need to possess the confidence to deal with senior executives and explain communication techniques to them.
  • Digital skills: Familiarity with information technology, especially digital and video means of communication, is essential.
  • Track record as an effective manager and inspirational team leader.
  • Comfortable making tough decisions and navigating internal organizational politics
  • Ability to work seamlessly across functions and with teams in different locations in the US, across time zones.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Expert with MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Flexible and enjoys handling a variety of tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended work at a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Regular trips to various out-of-state locations such as Kanab, Utah, Los Angeles, California, and other cities which may require use of public transportation.
