Position: Network Partner Development Strategist

Reports to: Shelter Liaison Director

Location: Remote

FLSA status: Exempt

Position Summary: This position is responsible for creating strategies to increase funding for achieving a No Kill nation by 2025. Specifically this position will create and help implement strategies for key network partner groups in order to build their fundraising capabilities in ways that directly increase and/or speed up lifesaving. This position will also help create and implement strategies that will increase partner funding for community No Kill collaborations.


  • Help key network partners and No Kill collaborations design and implement new and improved fundraising strategies that will result in faster, more effective, and sustainable lifesaving.
  • Collaborate with the Best Friends development team to help identify potential collaborative funding opportunities that cultivate BF resource growth.
  • Work with Best Friends Development team to ensure strategies and communications align with the vision, guidelines and values of the Best Friends development team and the larger organization.
  • Collaborate with Shelter Liaison Director and regional directors to consult on fundraising component of comprehensive partner assessments.
  • Along with Shelter Liaison Director and regional directors, help identify fundraising gaps in operations of strategic partners across the U.S.
  • Create written action/mentorship plans on how shelter partners can fill identified fundraising gaps and increase effectiveness.
  • Work closely with Regional, Network and other teams to identify resources that can help groups successfully implement recommendations/action plans.
  • Lead approved ongoing fundraising mentorship plans as assigned for key strategic partners. This may include, but is not limited to setting performance and reporting standards; analyzing and advising on progress towards established goals; coordinating collaboration opportunities; identifying other BF expert mentorship opportunities; and advising government leaders and other key stakeholders.
  • Provide partners with systems of accountability.  Empower partners to achieve goals, hold partners accountable and provide a monthly reporting system of determining measurable successes.
  • Work closely with Network team to recruit partners into the Best Friends Network.
  • Participate in regular meetings with staff and other stakeholders to oversee assigned activities.
  • Represents Best Friends at national, regional and state events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to fundraising and animal welfare.
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships with animal welfare and rescue community and other stakeholders with the intent to of reaching NK2025.
  • Critically analyze data to better direct resources to more efficiently achieve NK2025.
  • Ensure work is always consistent with and supportive of the BF organizational brand.
  • Collaborate with Communications division to best insure all program and communications goals are being met.
  • Insure volunteers are utilized effectively and are a core part of our work by collaborating with Visitors and Volunteers division
  • Interact with other BF support services to create and/or support effective processes, technologies, and other official BF operational policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree strongly preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive fundraising and marketing experience: 5+ years of proven successful experience
  • Solid management or leadership experience: 5+ years of proven successful experience.
  • Background in the animal welfare movement: 5+ years of experience working for or with an animal welfare/ government sheltering organization.
  • Knowledge of animal sheltering operations and marketing.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff and external stakeholders on all levels.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Experience in driving large projects made up of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism are necessary for this position.    
  • Experience in collaboration and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in various stages of development, each with a unique timeline.
  • Demonstrated ability to affect change/create positive influence on agencies outside of position's direct management control.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail.  Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Working knowledge of Google programs; Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint; and other systems as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.  
  • Ability to be in a shelter environment and work in the presence of both cats and dogs, including large numbers of cats and dogs as in a shelter setting.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Out of town travel for the job is expected to range from 40-60% depending on the location of the jobholder and specific responsibilities and tasks assigned.
  • Ability to drive a Best Friends vehicle when necessary.
