Reports to:  Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis  

Location:  Kanab


Position Summary:  The Financial Analyst supports the Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis and CFO in the provision of all financial planning, budgeting and management services to internal and external customers of the organization.  The Financial Analyst may assist the core accounting team on an as-needed basis. The Financial Analyst interacts with staff members from all areas of the organization, often management, including remote operations outside of Kanab.  The Financial Analyst reports to the organization's Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis, and has some interaction with the organization's CFO.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with the Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis, participate in the annual budget process, both operating and capital.  This includes assisting in the development of budgeting assumptions, working with managers at all levels of the organization to establish budget targets, analyzing budget submissions, updating budgeting models, and assisting with the delivery of final budget for loading into the accounting system.
  • Maintain the Rolling Estimate process, working with managers at all levels of the organization, to achieve a view of the future operating results of Best Friends.
  • Assist in the periodic review of the multi-year financial projections of revenue, expense and capital outlays for the organization.
  • Assist the Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis in financial scenario planning for the organization.
  • Coordinate with the Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis on the continued development of the internal monthly financial statement package and on ad hoc analyses and reports as may be required.
  • Assist in providing financial planning and analysis support for projects that are designed to improve our ability to predict the amount and variability of our key revenue sources.
  • Maintain a position control model in Microsoft Access and create meaningful reporting to be distributed to department managers monthly.
  • Participate in creating FTE reports comparing actual to budget for distribution to department managers monthly.
  • Assist the core accounting team with general ledger responsibilities as needed.
  • Develop an understanding of the Best Friends brand and ensure that the delivery of our financial planning and analysis services is consistent with and supportive of the Best Friends brand.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Must be personally committed to the Mission and Core Values of Best Friends Animal Society.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration from a four-year college or university.
  • At least 5 years of progressively more responsible experience in Finance or Accounting roles within a company or a non-profit organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel with manipulating large volumes of data using pivot tables and advanced formulas.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access or SQL.  Must have the ability to build complex, interdependent queries and build expressions.
  • Proficiency in the understanding and use of typical accounting information management systems, of personal computers, and of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be comfortable working independently with upper management and possess the appropriate level of professionalism to do so.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.  The ideal personality characteristics for this position would be a team player who is positive, proactive, personable, energetic, collaborative and tactful.
  • Must be able to work in a dynamic environment and possess the ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.  The work requires a strong attention to detail, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.  
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on key animal welfare issues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working at a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
