Location:  Kanab, UT

Position Summary:  The Staff Accountant supports the Manager of Accounting in carrying out the responsibilities of the Accounting Department.  


  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Analyze and record recurring monthly expenses (postage, telephone, & similar) into the general ledger, including calculating the allocation of these expenses to multiple departments.
  • Analyze and reconcile employee credit card activity.
  • Analyze various balance sheet accounts including receivables, prepaid expenses, and inventory, and prepare reconciliation reports.
  • Maintain fixed asset records by ensuring all additions and disposals are recorded, depreciation expense is calculated and recorded accurately, and all accounts are reconciled to the general ledger monthly.
  • Maintain schedule of temporarily restricted net assets by ensuring all related revenues and expenses are recorded correctly each month and reconciling the ending net asset balance.
  • Reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain supporting documentation during the year as support for the annual Financial Audit.
  • Assist other members of the Accounting Department with tasks including, but not limited to:
    • Maintenance of invoice and vendor documentation files.
    • Processing of A/P checks.
    • Entering invoices into the accounting system.
    • Departmental mail delivery.

Skills and Experience:

  • Must be personally committed to the Mission and the Core Values of Best Friends Animal Society.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting OR equivalent external work experience OR equivalent formal training in related duties.  
  • Proficiency in the understanding and use of personal computers, including Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook) and 10-key adding machine or calculator skills is required.
  • Nonprofit experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.  The ideal person for this position would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat and energetic, take initiative and uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.  Must be able to work in a dynamic environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to drive on organization business.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working at a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
