Position title:  Veterinarian Spay/Neuter Clinic

Reports to:  Manager - Spay/Neuter Services

Location:  Best Friends - Utah (South Ogden, UT)

Full and/or part-time schedules available.

High volume spaying and neutering is a big part of our Save Them All mission as it helps keep unwanted litters out of shelters, ultimately saving countless lives. Position Summary: Support Best Friends Animal Society's mission and goals by providing quality high volume spay and neuter surgeries, other general (minor) surgeries, medical care, and vaccination services for the general public, including Best Friends Animal Society's adoption  and community cat programs, and rescue and shelter partners.

Essential Primary Duties:

  • Perform high volume spay and neuter surgeries on dogs, cats, and rabbits. Be comfortable performing the following: cryptorchid castrations, in-estrus, pregnant ovariohysterectomies, and pyometra surgeries.
  • Perform surgeries on a variety of animals, with varying temperaments, sizes, and ages.
  • Perform pre-surgical exams on animals to determine if they are healthy enough for spay/neuter and determine appropriate plan of action if they are not approved for surgery.
  • Build up to an average of 40-60 surgical sterilizations per day on dogs and cats. Focus is mainly on felines, but includes dogs and rabbits as well.
  • In conjunction with spay and neuter surgery, perform additional minor surgeries including, but not limited to: growth removals, hernia repairs, abscess drainage, dewclaw removal, scrotal ablations, enucleations, and medically necessary amputations.
  • Able to competently manage complications and/or emergencies that arise from spay and neuter surgeries or other surgical procedures.
  • In conjunction with the Spay/Neuter Services Manager and Medical Director oversee and contribute to clinic medical, surgical, and anesthetic protocols to ensure high standard of care and best practices.
  • Manage on-site inventory of controlled substances including ordering, oversight of controlled drug log books, and perform monthly drug counts in conjunction with clinic SOPs.
  • Attend regular meetings with Spay/Neuter Manager and Medical Director to identify areas of improvement and continuing education opportunities.
  • Manage externships and provide mentorship to veterinary students at varying levels of education and experience.
  • Other duties as assigned by Spay/Neuter Services Manager, Senior Manager, or Regional Director.  

Experience / Requirements:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD) or equivalent required.
  • Accredited through the USDA APHIS National Veterinary Accreditation Program or be willing to obtain accreditation if requested for health certificate services.
  • Proficiency in spays and neuters of dogs, cats and rabbits.
  • Ability to competently manage surgical complications and/or emergency treatment as the situation requires.
  • Knowledge of and passion in continuing education in the field of shelter medicine, high volume high quality spay and neuter, and population medicine.
  • Must be able to work with and safely handle all conditions and temperaments of cats and dogs, including those with health concerns/conditions and as well as behavioral issues.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a license in good standing with the state veterinary board upon hire.
  • Work experience preferred in high volume spay and neuter setting.
  • Comfortable working with and/or around community (feral) cats.
  • License in good standing with Drug Enforcement Agency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff on all levels. Ability to educate staff via written or oral presentations Interest in continuing veterinary education and exploration of new technologies and treatment modalities.
  • Ability to answer calls from veterinary technician staff for emergency phone consultations from 7am to 7pm during work days.  
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends positions on animal welfare issues.
  • Work requires continual attention to detail.  Must be able to work at a fast pace with demonstrated good working habits in an environment that requires multitasking and multiple demands on time.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time (eight hours or more daily) while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity. Lifting animals of all sizes, bending, stooping, standing, and walking on a daily basis.
