Position: Team Lead - Cats

Reports to: Manager - Cats

Location: Kanab, UT

Best Friends is looking for someone with leadership skills, cat experience and a strong desire to find innovative solutions to save more lives. The cats need your experience, your organizational skills, and your kindness and so do the wonderful folks who look after them.

Position Summary: The Team Leader (TL) will be assigned several care areas and will assist in the coordination of workflow, control of work procedures, provide training and act as a liaison with management. The (TL) will have overall responsibility for the health, well being, and general care of the cats living in the assigned areas.

In addition, the TL will be assigned supervision of caregivers as specified by Manager. The TL will also provide guidance regarding general care issues, as well as problem resolution promoting Best Friends' standard of animal care.


  • With approval of Cat World Manager, perform the following functions for team members
    • Develop Performance Metrics
    • Monitor and Document performance
    • Manage the Performance Management process for their teams, including setting goals and leading performance review conversations
    • Provide guidance and coaching to members of their teams on all aspects of their current caregiver tier
    • Disciplinary action up to verbal counseling
    • Handle scheduling of caregivers
    • Participate in hiring decisions
  • Ensure all cats within area of responsibility are weighed (in kg) according to protocols.
  • Discuss large weight deltas with medical staff.
  • Ensure all records within area of responsibility  are accurate, organized, up-to-date, and easy to access.
  • Manage overtime of team members according to Manager directives
  • Work positively with all medical staff to promote the overall well-being of the cats.
  • Discuss specific cat medical/behavioral issues with medical staff and behavior experts as needed.
  • Act as liason between medical staff and caregivers as needed.
  • Ensure all maintenance/repair issues are reported to the Maintenance Department.
  • Provide leadership to team members. Cultivate mentoring relationships with team members.
  • Mentor and provide ongoing coaching for each individual caregiver to reach their tier potential.
  • Work positively with Adoption Team to promote cats to potential adopters.
  • Ensure the animals are treated with kindness and respect by all.
  • Relate to employees, volunteers, and visitors in a friendly, informative, and professional manner and delegate/assign tasks to ensure smooth and safe operations of Cat World and a positive volunteer/visitor experience.
  • Fill in as caregiver when schedule requires.
  • Identify improvements to tasks, processes, and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Skills & Experience:

  • A minimum of one year experience caring for cats in a community living situation to include medicating, socializing, and performing behavioral modification techniques.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations via BFAS Human Resources trainings or equivalent. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, positive, personable, upbeat and energetic who effectively uses tact, diplomacy, and clarity in daily interactions.
  • The successful candidate would take initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved.
  • Ability to make sound judgments, accept responsibility for ones' own actions, and work independently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Knowledgeable of cats, care giving, and characteristics of cats.
  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • The department
    • The organization's goals and strategies
    • Animal welfare
  • Display a willingness to learn by listening and asking questions. Be attentive to others' needs and willingly assist as required.
  • Proven communication skills with experience interacting with the general public.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues and act in best interest of operations.
  • Must have the ability to foster a cooperative work environment with staff as well as volunteers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft word, excel, Google e-mail, Google calendar, Google documents, ADP and BFIS
  • Must have a driver's license with access to transportation to drive on behalf of organization business

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 40 pounds
  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a  frequent basis, including, but not limited to: climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
