Position:  Overnight Veterinary Assistant

Location: Mission Hills, CA

Position Summary: The Overnight Veterinary Assistant provides quality medical care to the animals in the adoption center, oversee the health and well-being of the kittens in nursery including feeding of as well as cleaning of nursery cages. The Overnight Veterinary Assistant will also be responsible for answering the foster emergency number overnight and assist foster parents with issues, and triaging foster emergencies.


  • Feeding the kittens in the nursery and other designated areas according to the established protocol including bottle feeding and tube feeding neonates as assigned.
  • Monitor eating habits, make food adjustments as necessary and report to the supervisor when there are changes in appetite or weight fluctuations including weighing and recording on charts for neonates and kittens.
  • Perform routine visual checks, and administration of medications and treatments on all center pets including all areas where animals are housed.  Any animal needing immediate medical care will be triaged and communicated to the Veterinary Services Manager, Senior veterinarian, or other veterinary staff as needed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of cages including preparation of empty cages for new nursery intakes.
  • Act as the onsite contact for after-hours emergencies with animals in foster care including but not limited to answering emergency foster care phone number as well as answering foster care email.
  • Supervise and allow entrance to the overnight volunteers scheduled in the nursery.
  • Perform Euthanasia of nursery kittens as requested/prescribed/approved by the Senior Veterinarian.
  • Communicate clearly to staff and volunteers as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by Senior Veterinarian.

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Must work overnight hours, independently, with little to no direct supervision
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Prior experience as a Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Assistant, or relevant education and or certifications.
  • Euthanasia certification or training prefered but not required.
  • Experience with bottle feeding kittens.

  • Must be comfortable working with sometimes stressful situations including animal losses and answering emergency foster calls, handling each with care and compassion.
  • Experience with animal handling for medical procedures.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.  Strong listening skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn Google calendar, docs, Pet Point and email and ADP.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including, but not limited to: lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and handle all animals including cats and dogs.
  • Manual dexterity for keyboarding and computer work.
