Position: Caregiver/Rehabilitator 1 - Wild Friends

Reports to: Wild Friends Manager

Location: Kanab, Utah

 

Position Summary: Working within a team setting to provide for the well-being, care, and quality of life for all of the birds and mammals in the state and federally permitted educational wildlife program, and all domestic birds and mammals. Providing medical care to all the animals at Wild Friends as part of the Rehabilitation team. Working with the permit holders in the state and federally permitted wildlife rehabilitation program caring for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide care and handling for animals that have significant behavioral issues which may include shyness, fearfulness and aggression
  • Provide care for animals that have significant medical issues which may include a variety of zoonotic disease
  • Cross-train with Wildlife Rehabilitators and Caregiver Tier 1 to be able to provide basic staffing coverage in both rotations
  • Responsible for compiling government reports and monthly statistics
  • Coordinate adoptions - enter new animals into databases and get adoptables listed on BFAS website. Point of contact person for adoption inquiries
  • Provide tours of Wild Friends (be available to greet tours, speak about specific animals, speak about wildlife conservation and preservation, and answer questions) and participate in lectures/presentations as needed (e.g. Earth Day, Thursday Lunch, Division Meetings, etc.)  

Wildlife Rehabilitation Care: Cross-train with Wildlife Rehabilitators to be able to provide basic staffing coverage in that rotation for vacations and work summer orphan shifts (providing care for critical and neonatal patients) with varying times and required overtime.

  • Medical daily care of residents in the hospital and in population
    • Administer prescribed treatments (gavage feeding, bottle feeding, oral and/or injectible medications PO, SC and IM), wound care and weighing
    • Medical and behavioral charting - assess health of all birds and mammals daily
    • Clean habitats - provide food and water
    • Set-up caging/habitats for new or transitioning patients - tailored to provide species appropriate substrates, perching, enrichment, and materials
  • Clean work areas and preserve physical appearance of buildings and grounds (raking, sweeping, dusting, mopping, poop scooping, trash removal, scrubbing, weeding, etc)
  • Inspect enclosures for safety and security. Repair and/or report findings to Team Leader/Manager

Adoptable and Residential Care: Working with Wildlife Rehabilitators and/or Wild Friends Manager daily to monitor and assess condition of animals undergoing medical treatments (including restraint and handling)

  • Act as point person for residential and adoptable animal enrichment
    • Create appropriate enrichment plans (for a mentally and physically stimulating environment) for all suitable animals
    • Expected to become quickly familiar with medical and behavioral history for all 150-200 residents  - to facilitate assessments and create enrichment plans around existing special needs (with manager approval)
    • Monitoring each animal enclosure to be sure that existing enrichments/modifications are safe
    • Introduction of new enrichments/modifications into habitats - getting animals comfortable with items and teaching them how to use them
  • Provide care for residents in the hospital, new arrivals maintaining quarantine process, and residents being housed in Headquarters
  • Administer prescribed treatments (gavage feeding, oral and/or injectible medications PO, SC and IM), wound care and weighing
  • Medical and behavioral charting - assess health of all birds and mammals daily
  • Clean habitats - provide food and water
  • Clean work areas and preserve physical appearance of buildings and grounds (raking, sweeping, dusting, mopping, poop scooping, trash removal, scrubbing, weeding, etc)
  • Inspect enclosures for safety and security. Repair and/or report findings to Team Leader/Manager
  • Cross-train with Caregiver Tier 1 to be able to provide basic staffing coverage in that rotation
  • Relate to employees, volunteers, and visitors in a friendly, informative, and professional manner to create a positive volunteer/visitor experience and workplace environment
  • Ambassador of the brand for all volunteers and visitors, promoting the Best Friends mission and demonstrating the "specialness" that is the sanctuary
  • Responsible for the safety and training of volunteers: orienting them to assigned animal area, assigning work, answering questions, and assisting with their needs
  • Working and interacting with interns and workshop attendees: assigning work, answering questions, and assisting with their needs
  • Oversee work done by groups in assigned animal care area: ensure safe interactions between participants and the animals, assist in setting up the group with projects as needed, and answer question
  • Stock, inventory, and report needed supplies
  • Accept responsibility for one's own actions
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in licensed Wildlife Rehabilitation program (or comparable)
  • Proficiency giving SC and IM injections, oral medications and gavage feeding
  • Prior experience handling birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and chelonians
  • Strong desire to work with wild and domestic animals
  • Able to multi-task and take initiative
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to accurately assess health of all birds and mammals and communicate information effectively
  • Demonstrates approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred
  • Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive work environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, i.e., ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills
  • Able and willing to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues
  • Basic experience with or ability to learn Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook Suite
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays
  • Must have a valid driver's license and qualify for BFAS insurance

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely able to lift 40 to 50 pounds while doing the following daily strenuous tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and bending in temperatures that range from below freezing to 100 degrees
  • Must be able to work around allergens like hay, dust and bird dander and fur from a variety of species
