Position Title:  Director, Best Friends Animal Society - Los Angeles

Reports to:  Senior Director of Lifesaving

Location:  Los Angeles, CA

FLSA status:  Exempt          

Position Summary:  This is a leadership and management position within Best Friends Animal Society.  This position is responsible for overseeing the general management for Best Friends Animal Society's Los Angeles office, with presence and operations based out of Los Angeles City.  The Los Angeles director is also responsible for managing the integration of Best Friends Animal Society Los Angeles's staff into the organization culture.


Mission.  Lead the determination of the Mission (purpose and role) of Best Friends Animal Society Los Angeles within the Best Friends organization.  "Leading the determination" may involve reaffirming the existing mission, refining the existing mission, or other outcomes deemed useful.  Ensure that the mission is appropriate and consistent with Best Friends' organizational mission.

Vision.  Lead the determination of the Vision for Best Friends Animal Society Los Angeles within the Best Friends organization.  "Leading the determination" may involve reaffirming the existing vision, refining the existing vision, or other outcomes deemed useful.  Ensure that the vision is appropriate and consistent with Best Friends' organizational vision and Best Friends' leadership vision for the No Kill movement.

Strategies.  Lead the determination of the strategies for moving us from our Los Angeles Current Reality to our Los Angeles Vision.  "Leading the determination" will involve developing and choosing the key strategies from among many possible strategies and ensuring that there is broad understanding and support within the organization for these key strategies.

Organizational Capabilities and Capacity.  Lead the development of the Organizational Capabilities and Capacity required to implement the Strategies.


Culture.  As one particular organizational capability, ensure that Best Friends Animal Society Los Angeles employees understand the Best Friends organizational culture and act in accordance with it to achieve optimal results and employee engagement and to live and represent the Best Friends brand

Stewardship of the Best Friends Brand.  Ensure that Best Friends Animal Society employees understand the Best Friends brand and the role that they play in building, sustaining, and communicating that brand to external constituencies.


Leadership of "Best Friends Los Angeles"  

  • Align with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) on the promise of the "Best Friends Los Angeles" location brand, including the definition of what success looks like and the interim milestone goals.
  • Co-lead with National Marketing the development of the "Best Friends Los Angeles" location brand.
  • Lead the execution of "Best Friends Los Angeles" strategies and programs through general management of the adoption, spay/neuter, and partnering programs.
  • Ensure that "Best Friends Los Angeles" is always consistent with and supportive of the "BFAS" organizational brand.
  • Ensure that staff of the Los Angeles location as well as staff of the entire BFAS organization understand "Best Friends Los Angeles" location brand and that staff at all Best Friends locations work consistently to fulfill that brand's promise.
  • Represent the vision, strategies for achieving the vision, and status of execution of strategies in any meetings with donor prospects as arranged by or in conjunction with the National Development staff who have responsibility for "Best Friends Los Angeles" development efforts.


  • Work with the Senior Director of Lifesaving to define what the animal-saving goals of "Best Friends Los Angeles" as well as any other quantitative and qualitative measures of success.
  • Lead the development of strategies for what must be done to achieve those animal-saving goals. This includes all strategies related to adoption, spay/neuter, and partnering programs, as well as any other local initiatives and animal-saving.
  • Build the capabilities and capacity to implement the chosen strategies. This includes developing the organizational and individual capabilities in the following areas:
    • Performance measurement and reporting (setting planned animal-saving outcomes; accumulating and reporting actual outcomes; understanding the outcomes we got and why we got them)
    • Effective guidance to and collaboration with the National Marketing team to market the Los Angeles program's services (that is, to build demand for them) and to sell the Los Angeles program's services (that is, to fulfill the demand that has been built)
    • Delivery of adoption services, spay/neuter services, and partnering programs
    • Supplies and other inventory procurement and management
    • Facilities, equipment and utilities procurement and management
    • Staffing selection, management, development and retention
    • All other HR matters
    • All IT matters (in close coordination with central IT)
    • External and internal communications
    • Accounting and finance (including budgeting of expenses and revenues; accumulating and reporting actual results; understanding the results we got and why we got them)
  • Serve as the "Best Friends Los Angeles" principal liaison with all community partners: shelters, rescue groups, municipalities, elected officials, and others as relevant.
  • Create, develop and implement plans for Best Friends' involvement in designated key communities. This includes developing model No Kill strategies in target communities.
  • Represent Best Friends at local events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to our mission.
  • Develop, communicate, motivate and sustain a predisposition within the Los Angeles employees toward continuous improvement and toward innovation so as to save more animals.

National Programs Executed In Los Angeles 

  • Coordinate with the leaders of National Programs and National Events to determine which of these programs and events to execute in Los Angeles and at what scale.
  • Ensure that local staff and National staff work closely together to achieve the desired outcomes of these programs and events.
  • Evaluate the results of the programs and events in relation to the desired outcomes, and use this information to inform future strategic and operational plans.

Skills and Experience: 

  • Solid leadership and management experience: 5+ years of proven successful experience, including overseeing strategy, operations, budgeting and staffing.
  • Background in the humane movement: 5+ years of experience working for or with a humane organization preferred.
  • Experience with reviewing statistical information to inform program direction.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in difficult and fast-paced situations.
  • Experience developing and implementing management policies in a positive and fair manner. 
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism are necessary for this position. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to understand and manage a large budget.
  • Proven attention to detail with advanced organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' position on issues.
  • Experience with overseeing large scale events.
  • Experience working with volunteers and donors.
  • Public speaking and presentation experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion. 
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Ability to be in a shelter environment and handle dogs of all sizes and cats when necessary.
  • Able to drive a Best Friends van or other Best Friends vehicle when necessary.
