Position: Manager, Volunteer Engagement 

Reports to: Senior Manager of Lifesaving - Best Friends - L.A.

Location: Best Friends - L.A. (Los Angeles, CA)

 

Position Summary

The Volunteer Engagement Manager is responsible for the management of Best Friends Animal Society's volunteer programs, including foster, nursery, Pet Adoption Centers and outreach/events volunteerism. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will provide leadership for staff and volunteer teams who are consistently offering exceptional client service to one another for the purpose of maximizing our lifesaving abilities in Los Angeles.

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, facilitate, monitor, and evaluate all volunteer and foster programs issues and needs including but not limited to: oversight of foster/volunteer staff (lead and volunteer coordinators; foster coordinators), foster/volunteer engagement, volunteer shift fulfillment, volunteer mentors, foster/volunteer onboarding process, data entry accuracy and input, performance management, foster/volunteer and staff appreciation gatherings.
  • Ensure integration of the Los Angeles volunteer program with national volunteer and volunteer and foster engagement areas as appropriate.
  • Oversee and evaluate strategic recruitment of specific volunteer and foster needs, including increasing specialized care, medical and/or behavioral foster homes and all identified specialized volunteer roles for lifesaving needs.
  • Oversee the development of foster and volunteer operational programming, including creation/auditing of new volunteer or foster opportunities to maximize lifesaving needs.
  • Work with adoptions and medical team to ensure medical and adoption protocols are integrated into foster team programming and communications.
  • Keep detail and current records of all foster care pets through foster care team.
  • Assist the senior management team with defining the volunteer and foster goals and strategies for the NKLA Initiative/regional goals, as well as defining and executing the strategies to achieve said goals
  • Lead, track and consistently evaluate strategy to ensure key volunteer and foster shifts are fulfilled, as identified in collaboration with operational managers.
  • Represent Best Friends at national, regional and state events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics.
  • Ensure Best Friends - L.A. staff and volunteers are working closely together and productively with one another to achieve desired outcomes. In addition, deliver quality customer service including disseminating appropriate information as well as perform duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals and contributions and business for Best Friends Animal Society, NKLA and its programs.
  • Ensure that all staff, participating coalition partner and volunteer dissatisfaction is handled promptly and appropriately.
  • Perform scheduling and payroll and ensure that all time and attendance is correct and completed by deadline time and dates as well as ensuring schedules are posted two weeks in advance for all areas.
  • Interview, hire, train, perform consistent and timely corrective action and terminate employees consistent with the organization's mission, contracts, philosophy and law.
  • Work within budgets and meet revenue and expense goals as directed by executive team, plan and coordinate staffing, equipment, and facility needs.
  • Ensure integration of the Best Friends' program and brand with other areas of NKLA as appropriate.
  • As identified, build relationships with shelters, organizations and key individuals within designated communities.
  • Report on interesting stories within the community engagement area for the potential purposes of highlighting stories for the website, Best Friends magazine, as well as through our development team channels.
  • In the absence of or in assistance to, provide manager on duty support for the NKLA Pet Adoption Center as assigned by Senior Manager or City Director.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager or City Director.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Solid management/leadership and animal welfare experience: 2+ years of proven successful experience.
  • 3+ years of customer service experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in management or equivalent are preferred. However, experience above the minimum will be considered in lieu of a college degree and certification.
  • Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures in a positive and fair manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • A knowledge of or quick ability to gain information about kitten care.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends Animal Society positions on issues.
  • Ability to problem solve and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to set goals and work independently to plan and carry out projects.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication (verbal and written), listening and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Proven attention to detail with organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, especially larger and possibly untrained animals and unweaned kittens.
  • Knowledge of various breeds and their characteristics and familiarity with symptoms of diseases common to dogs and cats.
  • Ability to provide leadership and direction to employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, courteous and tactful manner at all times. Maturity, good judgment and professional personal appearance including the wearing of neat and clean uniforms.
  • Experience working in a municipal shelter or collaboratively with municipal shelters preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems and shelter software such as PetPoint.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Valid driver's license with access to transportation for travel on organization business
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor and routinely lift 40-50 pounds
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity
  • Lifting and handling animals of varying sizes and breeds, bending, stooping and walking on a daily basis
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time to include repetitive typing, arm and hand motion
  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule: includes weekends, night, holiday and on-call work
